The report I saw about the container ship said although it's the biggest at the moment they already have bigger on the drawing board. They think 24000 containers is possible! More worrying was the fact they said that any one time there 10000 containers floating in sea around the world that have fallen off ships.

They are still basically the same and some poor sod still has to get in and scrape the carp off the scavenge ports and chest, otherwise it builds up and goes on fire, which is bad; it's getting less common though as improvements in fuel injection and cylinder lube systems mean it builds up much slower unless summat's gone wrong. The donk on a boxboat that size will have a scavenge chest roomier than the average london flat.The first ship I sailed on as a 16 year old was a 5000 tonne gas tanker with a 2 stroke engine. Being a tall skinny streak of P**s the job of cleaning out the scavenge ports always fell to me, this entailed waiting for the engine to cool sufficiently so I could remove the access cover and climb in armed with a scraper and bucket. I hope they have made some advancements on scavenge port design as the thought of cleaning them on a ship of that size is the stuff nightmares are made off.
The grey funnel line run them on MDO, which is basically red diesel; as noted, you can run turbines on just about anything if you can squirt it through a nozzle.
Fuel economy on the last boxboat I did was 150 tonnes per day at about 22 knots; she was 280m, about 50,000 tonnes and the donk was 42MW@109rpm. That was big enough, sod working on something 5+ times the size.
