Hi everyone im currently pricing a 10x10 shed to sit at side of my house. only thing is my house is rented so im going to make it so its easy to dismantle. i plan on doing a fair amount of welding grinding.

has any one lined the inside of theres to protect agsinst fire?

I thought maybe just put some fire blanket around where i am working.

10x10 really isnt that big, you might find yourself wishing you`d got a bigger one. As for the lining i`m assuming you want to insulate and then line it, insulate it with whatever material you choose then line it with cheap 3 ply, that wont burst into flame quickly believe me, and its cheaper to buy, easier to cut and fit and a lot easier to handle than anything heavier

Nope but anything that is even theoretically combustible is a bad idea near me when I have welder/plasma going!

Had garage ceiling boarded when we built loft conversion on top, apparently 3 grades of board, normal and two grades of FR one blue one pink. Think Pink lasts longer in a fire.

I have been working in a wooden shed for four years.
Wood does not catch fire from sparks etc. Keep it tidy, no trash lying around and be wary of fire hazards and you will be fine.
There have been some great fires in concrete and brick buildings over the years.
It is the contents not the building that usually go up in flames.
Store nothing n the floor, have a welding area that is kept free of clutter, when you finish for the day have a tidy up and watch out for sparks and smoke.
Punch yourself when you see smoke rising from the rag bucket next to the bucket of white spirit. Ahem.

Seconding what chunko said, keep oily rags several feet away or in a box. Cotton doesn't tend to burn with welding splatter but a bit of oil in the rag and it's away in a flash.

I've had 0000 steel wool smolder and set fire to the box it was in - from grinding sparks! The box was on a shelf 2m off the ground and about 2m horizontally from where the grinding was taking place.

Not yet set anything on fire from weld spatter. I do have a large selection of increasing lace-like old fire blankets that I use when welding and grinding.

Having said that I routinely do as much of my cutting and grinding in my (very dirty) wooden shed, rather than my (relatively clean) brick garage.

The finer it is the higher the risk. I, of course, had grade 0000 for cleaning and polishing furniture.

I was always told the rule was stop welding one hour before locking up clean up work area empty bins etc so for the last hour you are on fire watch
this was working in car body shop
but now no one has time to do this but always a good rule

When I finish I do usually go round and tidy up, check regulators etc.
I think the smouldering rags years back taught me a lesson.
Ok on a tired day, have a cuppa and wonder around looking and listening.
But I hate coming in and finding tools all over the place.

As Chunko says, wood doesn't like to burn that much - rags are far more dodgy.

If in doubt get a kilo or so of Alum powder, dissolve in water and spray on. (It's what most fire retardant sprays are made of, but without the brand name or the expense )

Hot work on site normally has a 1hour fire watch rule of some sites will only let you hot work at special times with a warden present etc. I try to plan the job so that you have time to check for fires before leaving. By the time you have tided every thing away and got washed up and out of overalls that's about right my workshop is stone and cement roof but it's the rubbish inside that burns first

Sensible rules for a good reason! I'm a retired refinery manager so they are second nature to me. That's how we found the steel wool problem - tidying up the workplace at the end of the session and walking around saying to each other "Where's that smell coming from?", and not leaving until we had found it.

For the sake of around a fiver a sheet, just throw some plasterboard on the walls. I know its hard to set light to wood, but plasterboard is 100 x safer and dirt cheap.

Why wouldn't you? The place is tiny, so the cost is negligible.
