"Workshop Practice" books

Hi All,
As i am the level 3 engineering student of the year i got £40 in amazon vouchers, so i thought i would spend it on engineering books to help my practical skills i hope to learn at home. I have a few but to me they seemed to be aimed squarely at model makers and not professionals or tradesmen. See if you can borrow some at your library before you part with your vouchers.
I have a few books by john bird and find them very good, but again see if you can borrow them and see if they are any use to you.

ok thanks. I should of explained it better, i have had one short (1 hour) experience of practical engineering but would like to teach myself some new skills at home as a hobby.

What level does one have to attain before you make something?
Just wondering if at level3 you've only done 1hour practical to date.

It is not my day today, i am missing vital details out left right and centre.
it is a theory course, and the hour was done at school

right ok, best have a look at tools. what do i need first i wonder? ah a torque wrench will be useful!

i have a couple of the workshop practice books on foundry work and they are a very interesting read and also 'The Geometry of Sheet Metal Work', by A Dickason (but it hurts my head when i start reading that one)

as some one has already said you should spend some time in the library to help you to decide

I have quite a few of the 'Workshop Practice' series, most are irrelevant even to me but I got several for a job lot price so makes for ...er... bathroom reading material if nothing else.
Some of them are only any use if you have a machine tool in front of you, some were written so long ago that, to be honest, this forum has more up-to-date information (The Art Of Welding, anyone?) and so on.

You can certainly never have too many tools; the biggest problem I think for young lads is committing themselves to laying out funds on something that may not see use for the next 18 months.
At the other end of the scale are (or were) the youngsters who were apprentice/ trainee mechanics who would sign their lives away to buy a few Snap-On spanners every month... then when they wanted to go out on the lash they'd flog their tools to my mate's dad who ran a tool stall at car boot sales. My mate has a very healthy Snap-On collection acquired by that route but it has to be said that you DON'T need Snap-Off, Britool or Facom logos to get a serviceable tool, Halfords Pro range is as good as you need and has a lifetime warranty as well.
In fact if you watch Aldi they often have spanner sets for almost-pocket money that are a lot better than you may imagine - I have some of them alongside the Britool, Gordons and King Dick and I don't reach for any one in preference to any other.
If you want 'engineering' tools (micrometers, marking gauges etc.) then watch for used Moore & Wright, Starett, Mitutoyo etc. on Ebay - if you can work in Imperial then they are cheaper still.

Ten years ago an old boy down the road gave me a set of 3 books, Engineering Workshop Practice By Arthur W Judge, assisted by F Horner.
They were published by Claxtons of London.
He got them in 1936 when he was an apprentice. Dated in parts they may be but the overriding principles remain the same, they are one of my most prized posessions & i refer to them often for all sorts of jobs.
