Working from home

Hi guys, hope you can help me, i have recently started doing some of my aluminium tig welding bits from home and i was wondering just what i would need to do it as a 2nd job for myself. i have worked for other people doing this for 20years & am seriously thinking about starting on my own, as i am in full time employment it would be an ideal time to start up slowly and see how it goes, just not sure how working in a garage from home could work.

Hope you guys can shed abit of light on this matter please.

register as self employed with hmrc, then make sure they don't mess up the tax from your other job. They did with me and took weeks to sort out. Or as above just ignore it and go for it, my father dis for 20 years working out of his shed

Somebody I know makes gates in the garage at home. Neighbour reported him to the council who came out and agreed he could be classed as a "cottage Industry". Important thing was no customers visiting him at home.
Might be worth exploring the requirements so a Cottage Industry ?

will it be easy to prove that you are doing this as a business? I have made a few gates in the garden for a few people, and 2 wood burners and a few brackets and things, but the amount i do as a hobby it would be difficult for anyone to distinguish between work and play

Thanks for all the feed back guys, i have been doing classic bike repairs and motorsport 1 offs, petrol tanks etc, only doing 1 per weekat the moment as its more a hobbie.

because its all ally theres not really any noise with the air tools and safe with the argon so so far so good,

just do your own thing from home and say nowt. thats how most businesses start .i done shotblasting and also had a part time hire business from home amongst other things and never got me collar felt

I've been self employed and still am for some private work though I now work full time now , you don't have to register as SE for a few (3?) months so see how it goes. But if it's just a little bit here and there as said just keep it as a hobby to self fund your main hobby and it will be fine. But if it takes off the I'd consider sorting out proper SE with the HMRC, as tools and kit ect can go down as a business expense

End of the day your PAYE wage wont need anything doing with, just fill in a tax return at the end of the year for your SE. But it's only worth it if your doing a few K a year extra and you want it to show up to help increase your gross pay for financial reasons, you will have to pay a little more NI too though

When working at home I try and work inside if I can, out of sight out of mind. NI is a pittance and the Tax easy to sort, note payments in a diary and keep receipts. If you are worried about a Tax bill stash 20% away of all payments and you should be well covered.
