Wooden Chopping Boards

Long had wooden chopping boards over plastic.

Understand Maple, Cherry etc are the best.

But if using end grain, which glue do you use that's food safe and waterproof?

Which wood would be best for just making a long grain board? See a lot of olive ones about?

There's a hardwood offcuts place within half an hour but I need to know what I'm asking for before setting about making something

Titebond 111 is food safe

The olive ones are sawn rounds from the trunk and coated in olive oil. n o glue

u need to look on utube for idea's as well.....
Birch is also good but very bland.....nut nice if mixed with darker woods..
Ig u can get any exotic's the colours are so much better.....
The main reason u see a lot of Olive wood is because it's diff to get big pieces.....
Anything like a small to med cheese board made from one piece is diff....
as an add on....
there is a lot of Olive wood coming out of Italy right now as there there is a bad tree infection and a lot of groves are neing destroyed to get rid of the probs....

wish we could get exotics here......hard woods here like Oak etc is more than double the cost of UK and dont talk about Mahogany substitute

Sycamore is very good for chopping boards as it is naturally antimicrobial. It also is unpopular for firewood and milling so is a cheaper wood and can produce some magnificent burrs with amazing patterns so very decorative

Also bread boards and rolling pins.

Beech was traditional. end grian s the cutting face.
The blocks were not glued, but held in a jointed frame.

I normally make one from the solid oak work surface I've fitted in kitchens, the cut out from the hob or sink is usefull, I have a wooden table in storage the has a top made from off cuts of oak with 40mm x 40mm staves the I sliced every 2.5 inches then glued upright to make the end grain the surface

I treat all the pva/ white wood glues as "food safe" .
It's not like your drinking the stuff straight out of the bottle , the amount you'll get on your plate is negligible !
Same goes for the wood - unless your thinking of actually eating the chopping board .

Ive used cascemite in the past.

Good gap filling properties also.

I got a Bamboo one a couple of years ago and it's holding up brilliantly.

Is not...? Walnut oil the stuff of choice for finishing chopping blocks and wooden spoons...?

Food safe - does not go rancid - dries hard like tung oil over about a week - not solvent based.

£2 for 250ml from Tescos.


I have used Walnut oil on my hands before - when I run out of O'keeffes working hands cream. Did much the same thing to be honest (and it is cheaper).
