Interesting thread! The best advice I was given when choosing our stove was to get one with large glass windows so you can really appreciate it once lit - I find them so therapeutic! We have a Charnwood - i'll post a link if I can, I predominantly use smokeless fuel - I find it far more cost effective. But yeah, really recommend this multi-fuel stove
I have a Firefox 6 in the conservatory which does not get any sun until late afternoon tried central heating radiator not warm enough, electric fan heater too expensive we found we could only use the conservatory June/July/August or there abouts we now use it all year round with the stove and I am lucky because I can get free logs from a tree surgeon the Knotty ones that are difficult to split but with a chainsaw and hydraulic log splitter who cares if they are free.Alan
hi,
we had an open fire for a couple of years, it gave off about 10 watts and sucks cold air into the house to replace all the heat going up the chimney, a complete waste of time if you ask me!
so, replaced with a Stovaz Riva vision Medium, 8Kw!
it looks brilliant, gives of 10 times as much heat as the open fire and uses less wood. We've compared gas consumption and estimate its saved £200 this winter!
One option i went for was the rear air intake...
rather than it taking in air from the room...that ultimately has to get into the house through the door frames, windows, cracks etc you put a plate on the bottom and a 4" duct out the back and drill a hole into the back of the chimney stack out into the garden, so all the -10 degrees cold air is direct from the garden to the fire without going through the house! Brilliant option to fit.
I would highly recommend this fire, but not that cheap.
I fitted it all myself following the regs very carefully, lined the chimney etc, no hetas certificate but i'm totally confident it in and it works like a dream (carbon monoxide detector is permanently required!) There are some companies selling all the bits and they have lots of info on how to do it properly.
i have a van and am not scared of the dark, so wood isnt a problem
Great stuff, we have an open grate gas fire now and don't use it as the heat is crap and the draught is so bad up the open chimney that we have to block it up in the winter, cost a lot to run too.
We are looking at the Stovax riva 40 as an option, we need an inset fire here as a stove would take a lot of work to fit. The choice is massive though, having a hard time choosing. Needs to be multifuel, constant use, overnight, high efficiency and 4-5kw max.
Where is it possible to collect wood, I know it has to be seasoned but are there any allowable places that it can be collected??
That's the sort of thing I like, I will ask around the estate where I work first, loads of factories there.
I can get plenty of pallet wood, all untreated/painted, I know the flat strips will only really be good for kindling but the leg blocks are solid chunks of wood so should be ideal for fuel, I can get loads of that junk.
You will be we've been sat with all the doors in the house open, including the back door while it was pelting down with snow, and we were still mafting
