I think ive clinched a log burning stove for the lounge, its 2nd hand and although its all there regarding bits and pieces the cast iron has took on a grubby look to it and i want to bring it up nice and black again but without paint. Now i seem to remember when i was a kid everyone rubbed summit on the victorian fire places and mantles that kept them nice and black but i dont know what it was. Whats the seceret???

zeebright black lead grate polish. clean it back and get polishing

Google 'stove black' or 'stove polish'. Either term should return cartloads of suppliers.

update on this....the insulating blocks have seen better days on my stove,where can i buy this and does it come in squares which you can cut yourself to shape??

Hi you could try Housing Units of Hollinwood near Oldham they sell that type of thing so might get lucky there.

Most stove shops or refractory suppliers (sell kiln and forge lining materials) will have soft fire brick and you can cut it with a hand saw. If it's a proper well designed multi fuel burner you should be fine to use paint or blacking on the outside as they should not get hot enough to burn the coating off.
