wood turning/wood work forum?

I know a lot on here have other hobbies and are members of other forums so thought it worth an ask.

Would any of you recommend any forum/s in particular?

I have watched a fair few pootube videos, but as a complete novice it's hard to tell which contain good advice or simply someone who thinks they know it all.

With that in mind I'm looking for somewhere with information that starts at the very beginning, especially for wood turning.

Any suggestions?

Have you seen Frank Howarth on youtube, amazing work (both with content and editing) definitely something to aspire to.

Hi Whatever size lathe you build make it from the heaviest materials you can, there are examples on the internet of massive lathes made from concrete,scaled down it could be good, if you use 1 inch plummer block bearings and 1 " silver steel for the head stock spindle, have it threaded 1x 8 tpi for a common and cheap supply of chucks and faceplates, the tailstock is probably the most difficult, I made mine in 1983 and have made many things on it ,a 12" sanding disc is also very useful,min of a 1/2 hp motor, a bit of ingenuity and a few quid could get you a tool that would last a lifetime,hth ,ther are some pics of mine on the forum.

Homemade lathe upgrade

"Aquired" a pair of galvanised " I " beam fence posts excess materials on a compound built at work cut down to 8ft set up with 12mm stud and nuts to make the rails parallel, it was then welded to the box section ends from the old lathe bed,I had to scrape the galv nibs off here and there but the tailstock slides fine.this gives 6ft between centres! headstock rotates for bigger diameters, it also can be positioned anywhere on the bed rails, next project on it is wooden naval cannon replica about 3 ft long for the patio!

Nice lathe you have there. And the acorn is great, my father would love one so I may try something similar when I get set up.
