wood saw to metal saw

hi there
not sure were to put this question and if its possible but here goes. i have a challenge MMs5805 saw which ive used for wood projects. as i wanting to cut some metal is it possible i could put a metal cutting blade on this machine or am i needed a metal chop so. its for a small project after xmas. an infor appricated thanks

What sort of 'metal' do you need to cut?

Just so long as any blade you obtain can cope with the spindle speed it'll 'work'...

at the most it be 50mm box for one piece rest will be 40mm thickness 2mm thanks for reply

A wood saw will probably turn far too fast for a TCT blade so you'd therefor been looking at an abrasive disk, i.e those used in grinders.
You would have to check the speeds involved (should be on your saw and also on the disks you'd be getting) but provided they're safe and you can find the right sized disk with the correct sized spindle hole I don't see why not.
Clean up (perhaps move the saw) all wood dust though, as there could be a serious risk of fire from throwing grinding sparks where wood dust gathers.

the machine max is 5000rpm and is only a one speed machine. the wood blade fitted is a tct sawblade max 6000 thanks for all the infor.
so a metal tct blade correct size is and max 5000rpm what im looking to fit .

Woodworking tools can cut aluminium easy enough but steel really needs the right blade speed otherwise the cutting edge gets fritzed; those evolution saws seem popular.

Just a " daft " thought would it be possible to run a 240v wood saw with a metal cutting blade on a 110V transformer?

I'm talking about TCT blades for metal which run a lot slower and are unlikely to suit your saw. Check the speeds but don't get your hopes up.

Wood cutting saws typically have a 30mm dia arbor, metal cutting chop saws typically have a 25.4mm dia arbor. This is to try and stop people fitting steel cutting blades into wood mitring saws. Aluminium/plastic cutting blades exist in both arbor sizes as those materials cut nicely at wood working speeds

Dunno if they still exist but a few cheapnese suppliers used to make steel cutting blades to fit wood saws. They're about as useful as a chocolate teapot because of the massive differences in cutting speeds... actual rpm obviously depends on blade dia, ~1400rpm is the usual no load speed for 12 - 14" TCT / 'dry cutting' chop saws and it's still very easy to muller blades quickly with the wrong technique even when the workpiece is securely clamped. Try and hold the box section against the fence like you do with wood and it won't end well

Abrasive chop saw blades also have a 25.4 mounting hole and typically run somewhere in the high 3k rpm range. I'd have thought they're also more likely to explode if run too quickly whereas TCT blades would probably go blunt in next to no time and then maybe start shedding carbide tips?

I've notice most tct metal blades run around the 3000rpm so I just be wasting my money.so I think I spend the extra on a metal chop saw. aswell as for safety issues. thankyou for all input in this post.

That's why I said to check the speeds - that's what's important, for functioning correctly and of course safely.
It's possible that a wood saw still turns too fast for an abrasive wheel for steel.

The TCT blades in cold saws run that slow its almost possible to count the rpm,s with the eye

Multipurpose saws (evolution etc.) run in the thousands of rpm...

yea thats what i said anyway my point was which i should of made clearer is you cant use the segmented TCT cold blades in a high speed saw...i have 8 of them and have no cold saw so useless

Cold saws typically use HSS blades and run at say 26/52 rpm for a 14" blade
Dry cut chop saws have TCT blades and usually run at 1400ish rpm for a 14" blade
