I have some telegraph poles to build a pole barn ,they’ll bolt to a steel foundation plate,so will be 15mm above ground surface,I want to soak the ends in my waste oil drum,upright,how long to leave them immersed? Thanks.

waste oil wont soak in very well .thin it down with parafin or use proper creosote

i would agree if they was going into the ground and i would add tar them as well

but there not and he will have to put with the treatment leaching out of the telegraph pole anyway

your steel which one are you using ?

are you concreting inside of it ?
will this also be above ground level ?

Our telephone and power poles in Australia are Coprus Cyanide treated. If English poles are the same, you wont need anything.
If you cut them though they will shrink!! so be careful if you set something up with a laser level. They wont stay level for very long.
Coprus cyanide is green when new, Its easy to tell then, but it fades over time and weather.

I wouldn't bother, I have used chopped up telegraph poles as is for farm gate posts out in the fields, they are in clay that never really dries and are all still good thirty+ years later.

This. They are way better than tantalised posts. Way better.

Eventually, when they do go, it's generally rot from the exposed cut top that penetrates the less tanalised core and makes the top go spongy. In your pole barn, the tops should be undercover anyway.

One thing to consider, a neighbouring pole barn shed owner was concerned it would blow away as the poles were squelching up and down in their wet earth holes. He ratchet strapped the worst down to tractors and other heavy things until the storm passed. But worth considering what may happen if gravity gets overwhelmed.

yes i was told it rots the wood eventualy but i cant see it myself id use it if its cheap

There are telephone poles & electricity poles on our farm, been in the ground over 50 years & still sound. A few years ago they replaced some of the electric poles & left us the old ones. We cut them up & used them for gate posts & they were still perfectly sound apart from a few inches at the top where the centre had rotted a bit.
