wood lathe

has anyone had a go at making a wood lathe?
i used to have a drill powered one years ago but sold it due to lack of space.
i would like to get back into it but cant justify spending loads on a new lathe to only use it now and again.
i did google how to do it but some of the examples literally were made of wood and not very substantial looking

just looking for inspiration.
one of the problems with my old one was the tool center mounted into the chuck of the drill putting sideways load on it which isn't ideal.
so i was thinking maybe it would be better to try a belt drive of some description?

Have a look around the place sometimes colleges and schools have old ones stached away places and they are usually willing to sell them for not to much. My friends dad bought one off the high school we both attended for £100. It was a good one as well came with all the accessories full size.

like Robbie said, just look around.....u'll even find something better than a drill powered lathe for less than 50squids.......there are loads about.......have seen Draper and the like as low as £20 on car boots.........
these are bench top models with about 30" between centers.......if u think about it carefully, it can be mounted in such a way that it'll be easy to move and store........
it's the chisels and other bit's and bob's that'll cost u money........

Best to go down the second hand route. I picked up a Clarke machine with all the tooling etc for £50

That's similar to what I have in mind for mine. When I get around to it. Life gets in the way.

i got one
not in the best nick but its a great starting place.
it didnt have a motor but i happen to have an old drill with a duff chuck i can canabalise to try.
