wood burning stove - not the normal typical 'how can i'

Hi All

Does anyone know of a person/persons who regularly converts old calor gas bottles to wood burning stoves OR would make 1 to order

I dont have the bottle (excuse the pun) or experience to convert 1 myself and was wondering how/where i could get 1 done for me with winter fast approaching

get a bottle and get started you dont need experience
vent the bottle by removing valve fill with water to the top to expel gas if its lpg turn upside down first to drain then fill with water.
cut out a door a hole for the flu weld on the flu hinge the door add a catch and away you go.
dont forget to add a way of governing the air intake to controol the burn
such as a tube welded on with a butterfly type vale in it

Just reading through a few old threads and realised no one has mentioned the lining in the gas bottles. I was told there was a lining and a couple of mates who used to build them purged them with water and then emptied them but then threw them all on a great big bonfire to burn something off....or am I missing the point?

It's the paint and the galvanising that needs burning off - better outside on a big bonfire, than in the living room (or shed!)

SO its the paint on the outside not the inside?? My reasoning is that if its the inside it would be better to wait until you make it and then fire it up outside. If its the outside its better to wack it on a nice bonfire..

Made a couple in the past, and I left removing the paint until the very end of the process.

Remove valve, and purge.
Cut three sides of the door, and add hinges, note catch positions then cut the remaining side.
Drill 150mm hole for the flue, weld a short length of pipe in to the hole.
Add an internal, removable, baffle plate.
Add vents to the CSA of the flue, along with suitable controls to "damp" the fire.

Once completed, start a fire in the burner outside, keep it well stoked with burning material and get it cherry red and the paint and galv will magically disappear!

yes. AFAIK (and I've cut up a fair few) NO gas bottles have any sort of "lining" inside - I did read of an american(?) water tank having a glass liner inside a stainless steel shell tho.

Do not fit a baffle plate in the flue.

Restricting the flue could kill you through carbon monoxide poisoning.

I purge the bottle then cut as desired, any areas to be welded i grind off the galv coating before welding, finally get it blasted to remove the galv and give the bottle a uniform finish before painting with high temp paint.

I would never grind off the galv on a bottle, its thick, and it takes a lot of effort. I just fire it up with waste wood, and vacate the area. All that's left is a white powder, that brushes off.

I have never found the galv on bottles to be very thick at all. One of my mig sets didn't like welding the un-ground metal at all,( i think it is the Kemppi 180,the zinc vaporising and boiling off upset the arc for some reason) some times the base metal is very pitted and the galv stays in the pits if they only have a light grinding etc.
