wood burners/ stoves

the guy who lives next door seems to have rigged his house up to some kind of wood burning stove instead of the usual gas central heating that the rest of the houses in the street have. you can see the massive brick chimney sticking out the roof. the street i live in is like on that old program brookside (but without people buried under the patio)

the problem is that when i get home from work on the night time the street absolutely stinks of burning and is often full of smoke. its like every night is bonfire night. ive not seen a massive pile of logs in his back garden or seen them carrying any kind of fuel into the house so don't know what he is burning but it is really annoying me! is there a special fuel you are supposed to burn or can you just stick any old junk on.

the guy is a bit of a prick so if i can cause him trouble with the local authorities it would be awesome.

Environmental health would be the way to go.

I think you're allowed 20 mins of smoke when you first light the fire.

You're only supposed to burn "clean" wood, i.e. no paint, preservatives and no chipboard &c with glue in it.

im not a country bumkin so know nothing about these contraptions. i wouldn't have thought it be allowed as if we all had one the place would be like a war zone.

If you're in a smoke controlled zone IE smokeless, you're only allowed to burn designated smokeless fuels, if he has a stove that's been approved by DEFRA for burning in smokeless areas you can burn wood on it, you report it to the local environmental health dept & they ask you & the ''burner'' next door to keep a diary for a few weeks, ie when it's lit type of fuel etc & when it annoys you, after that if it's still a nuisance they'll do their own test & take it from there,even if you're not in a smokeless zone [like us] you still can't be a nuisance to others, quite a lot of complaints to EVH are grudge complaints but if it's a valid reason perhaps he'll stop [or he'll be made to by them]

Also a limited amount, though not as much as when lighting, when 'charging' the fire

Nor are you supposed to burn treated/plasticised paper, plastics etc.

Second, if he is forewarned that he is being monitored there is a good chance he will make sure he complies with the smoke regs, but only whilst he is being monitored.

which is why after you've BOTH had your say,then EHD will do independent verified tests themselves, it doesn't matter if he still makes a nuisance after it's all finished with, if it starts again EHD are obliged to investigate ALL complaints false or otherwise.

Maybe he finds cremation easier than interment........
