Wood burner

Some great projects going on here, kinda inspirational.
I took advantage of the lovely weather today, and finally finished a burner I started sometime last year.
I think the bottle originally held expanding polystyrene under pressure, its a fairly thin bottle compared to the gas bottles so it was easy to work with. Stainless chimney I salvaged from a boiler of sorts.
The leg is a 75mm heavy-ish gauge stainless tube, split in 4, and "precision manipulated" into 4 legs. It looks gangly and baby giraffe-like, but its actually very steady and would be quite difficult to knock over.
Painted with black stove enamel.

My first thought was it looks like it may topple easy, so I hope you're right it's steady.

Also looking at it I noted two things from what others say about these things.

1) You have air holes at the bottom, so as to enter under the burning wood. The general view is that burning wood should have the air hit the top, and the bottom should be for catching ashes.

2) The door is very low, which would make loading up with more wood awkward, and ashes and embers would likely come out.

Or have you had it burning already and it worked OK?

It worked very well actually, but your right about fuelling it, the door is too low.
It takes a small amount of wood to get a great blaze going, but if too much goes in it gets too smokey. Probably due to the position of the vents, which are actually about 2" above the base due to the "bowled" bottom.
So basically, it burns very well, gets extremely hot, but it needs regularly fuelled with small amounts, rather than piled up with loads!
Wee edit, the leg is made from 75mm stainless, not 50mm.

Second attempt will probably be better......

Cut the wood to the right size and drop it down the chimney, no need to open the door then

IMO you want a door towards the bottom for clearing it out and a decent size one higher up so you don't have to cut the wood up into matchsticks to fit it on
As above I often drop thinner bits of wood down the chimney aswell

I use the bottom door as a vent, the hinge broke, I was gonna fit a better one bit it works well just wedged in place


I take it when I'm away camping in the van, saves making a mess of the ground with an open fire (and more subtle), I usually take my own wood aswell

Here's when we were away a few weeks ago in the middle of nowhere towards the west coast, cooking a few mussles gathered an hour earlier

And this was camping at the end of feb, the gas stove was on cos this was morning and I wasn't lighting a fire
I made the wooden "furniture" out of pallets
