wood burner for birthday

Im looking to create a wood burner for my Grandad for his birthday.Ive made a few and he is interested in them however he would not ask for one.

Plan is to make him one , but the ones ive been doing havent really been up to much .

Things i would like to improve are

Heat output
baffle ?
Appearance
just all in all better wood burner

X2 on better hinges, either make some from tubing and rod or buy heavy duty ones and plug weld through the screw holes to make the welds look like rivets, you can buy weld on hinges on the Bay and they are not too dear. A i like to fit a baffle inside, and some design of flat area to the top,for a bit of cooking or boiling water for a brew.

Baffle should be about 2/3 of the cross section, and slope up a bit at the front a couple of inches above the door.

I agree with Gordon, he gave me the flicker of the idea to create my workshop heater, the pipe behind the heater is nothing to do with it ;-)

I like the idea of those weld hinges , that would look a lot neater .its a lot simpler than what i was going to do too.
my log burner does not seem to get hot enoguhb , heard people get them glowing and stuff , any idea how people achieve this ?

My training officer casts aluminium with his but he used a hair dryer to force more air in.

thing i hate most about my burners is the legs , what do other people do ?

use the grab handles from the top of the cylinder or the base ring on the bottom

X2 with Badger1bear, i always utilise the top and bottom rings from the bottle where possible.

i thought about this but the majoity of people ive made them for dont want them to look like a gas bottle

I use the handles sometimes, the latest one I am doing I cut the whole top off at the first seam and welded that to the bottom. Then I welded a flat plate on top, flue out the back at the top and a baffle plate exactly as @julianthegypsy suggested, the plate will help keep the heat in longer. Yours all heat will go straight out as the flue is directly over the flame area.

Love the upside down idea Gordon. Very ingenious.

Removed the top and rewelded to bottom to serve as chamber for ash Collection pan. Recessed top for cooking. But difficult to keep rust free outside.
