Wood bothering lathe

So, the father in law is retiring next year and is doing a course in woodwork.

He has expressed an interest in getting a lathe to keep him occupied in his retirement. So i decided to have a look around for one to get him for christmas.

Had a look at the one in the local machine mart (£120 new) and was a bit disappointed at the quality, so had a look on ebay and found him a beauty.

A solid Myford wood lathe on a cast iron stand

I won as the only bidder for £50, leaves a few quid to get him some tools to go with it.

Picking it up tomorrow and will give it a good clean and service

Nice lathe and you did the right thing, I have used both the cheaper 'tin' ones and an old heavy cast one...a world of difference.

Good tools and a visor next...being in a small shed with an escaped lump of wood bouncing off the walls is a memory that still gives me the shivers.

I upgraded from a Clarke pressed tin one to a small Record Power one. Worlds apart.

nice buy - if you've got a mind to.... build a 4 inch deep 'box' as a shelf and fill it with sand to add even more vibration damping mass and there's loads of choice out there now for decently priced wood chucks

Whatever it is its got to be better than a modern chinese built one.

I bought a Coronet lathe for £40 - only wanted the motor and pulleys and they would have cost much more than I paid for the entire thing.

We've got a couple of Record ones and a dinky little Charnwood in the "woodshop" in my parents' garage (mine is slightly smaller than a shoebox). My parents are both on the commitee of the local club and I dabble. Apparently there's a turning club in Liverpool that was "given a boat-house at the side of a lake" in a park.

I'm guessing most boat-houses would be next to a lake (or body of water).

If you can't identify it from that (not sure how many parks there are with boating lakes in or around Liverpool) or a Google search send me a PM and I'll get them to ask around at the next meeting to see if any of the other members can fill in some more details.
