Wiring a pedal.

I have bought a cheap pedal with two plugs, a two pin and a 3 pin. I need to swap these for a single 5 pin. I know the pinout for the socket on my welder has two for on and off and the other three holes are max, centre and min according to the diagram. The two pin plug for on off is self explanatory but the three pin I am not sure of. It is a 10k potentiometer and when I put the tester probes in two of the holes I get a reading of 9.78, near enough 10 and if I press the pedal nothing happens. With the probe in a different hole I get 9.78 and when I press the pedal it drops to 0 and if I swap it into the other it goes from 0 to 9.78 so I assume the common pin is the one I didn't move and the other two are min and max but which is which? I'm sure if I get them wrong the pedal will just work backwards but any ideas or has anyone already done a similar swap.

If it's liek the murex it's a pot[pair of pots] replacing the panel volume control when you switch from panel to remote. So I f you find the wires to the panel pot and see what socket terminals are connected to Gnd V+ and Vout. Mine is connected so I get from 0v upto V+ on vout according to pedal state.

A variable resistor consists of a fixed resistor (the terminals that didn't change when you measured at them) and a centre 'wiper' that moves across the resistor (this one would change resistance when your meter is connected to it and one od the 'fixed' terminals)

I'd measure the voltage at the three terminals on the machine, to work out which is the +ve and which is -ve (connect to eitehr end of the pot, I suspect they are max and min respectively?) and the wiper connects to centre.

I had a play with this today with some pieces of wire pushed into the sockets on the pedal and into the sockets on the machine and it worked but with no regulation first time. I was right on the centre or common pin and when I swapped the other two wires over it worked as it should so now all I need is a 5 pin Amphenol plug to swap for the two on there so a visit to the welding supplier should see it up and running.
