Wirespool question

Hey All

My first post as I have just picked up a second hand welder off my brother-in-law's father. So he gave me a Transmig 195 which is about 15 years old. This has done him very well on the farm but required to upgrade to a more powerful one.

Anyway, he mentioned that the wire spooler motor has an issue and that it needs to be looked at. I have attached some photos.

When I set up welder and pull the trigger, the wirespool is very jumpy. Its not a smooth continuous motion and therefore, will be no good for welding. I am wondering how I can fix this? What I have done
- Pulled apart the motor and cleaned. I noticed that the brushes were quite short as the spring has almost fully extended
- After first clean, spooled evenly. However, after waiting a few hours, returned to welder and tried again. This time it again was jumpy
- Pulled apart again, cleaned and still jumpy

What I have setup
- no wire
- pulled the earth pin off the 15A plug because I only have a 10A wall socket. (when welding, will put back on the 15A earth pin)

If anyone can recommend what to do or if they require further information/ photos, please let me know

Had very little experience in welding so look forward to getting into it once I fix this welder up.

You can try disconnecting the motor and connecting it to a 12V battery. If it runs smooth, then it is not the motor.

Could be the brushes are shot. You might be able to find something similar to replace them.

Thanks for your comments. I have checked the motor by connecting the motor to the cars 12v battery: Worked well.

Other trouble shooting performed
- Check the wiring in gun- all OK

I suppose that I need 12V across the terminals of the motor? Unfortunately my sister borrowed my multimeter and can not tell you the voltage.

I have attached a photo of the back of the welder if anyone has any more thoughts?

have you checked the torch liner to see if the wire pulls thro' freely by hand,could be that after this length of time and farm type use it's time for a new one.

Also remove the tip, and see if that makes a difference, sometimes a bit of spatter will make the wire come out jerky

Am i reading right that you have no earth now on the plug? Or am i being a dullard

I've got what seems to be an almost don't ask silly question. Where is the transformer in this welder?

Yes, i'm with Gordon on thisone...blow through the liner with an airgun or even better change the whole thing, a new tip would be great too (make sure it's the same size as the wire!) and what do the wire feed rolls look like?

Before you do anything else probably a good idea to sort the plug/socket out, so you have the full supply and an earth.

As Gordon and Sparkey have said, chances are its the torch liner. See if wire pulls through it without any fuss.

Put some wire in and connect the wires that switch the motor on/off, while you have the torch removed.
Looks like its the two black wires in pic 2, but check, they will be coming from the back of the torch socket.
See if it runs smooth, pinch the wire tight between your fingers as it comes out. If that seems smooth, it'll probably be the liner/tip in the torch.

It would take some monster fault to end up with mains voltage at the torch; chances are that if such a thing happened it would fry the wirespeed control, the motor would pack in and welding would cease. A fair bit of the world manages quite well without an earth on their electrical supply... I'd be more interested on what circuit protection there was on the socket supply (knowing Aussies it's probably a 6 inch nail or wad of ciggy paper ).

I'm surprised no one has asked what state the wire is in!!

Is the wire clean with NO rust at all?

Hey all

Happy new year to all and I hope that you all had a great celebration. Sorry I was not able to reply between responses but may be due to the time difference.

I realised that the garage the welder will be put in only has 10A wall plugs (Australia) where I require a 15A for the welder. I have a circuit with a 20A fuse so I will replace the plug with a 15A one so the welder can plug straight up (so I am running the earth wire)

A few of you have raised a few points and I think that the following will cover most of them
- The torch liner needs replacing as it looks horrible (really old and crappy)
- I think that the tip may need replacing too (really old and crappy)
- Transformers are sitting below that shelf sorry. Did not take a photo of them. I can if you need?
- Wire feeders look pretty good. They had some rust on them but I got some emery cloth and cleaned them up pressy good.
- I dont have any wire yet as I was not going to purchase any until I have the unit working

From all your comments, for the welder to operate correctly, do you need
- Wire in the feeder?
- tips and nozzzles connected?

How come I can not just plug up the welder and operate the motor without any wire or tips? Is this not just a circuit that the welder handle has the switch. Therefore, it should work without any wire/ tips/ nozzles?

I will take a couple of days to get the parts if required so if you think so, I will get them. I am not sure why the welder would not work without the above listed.

Look forward to your comments. Really appreciate your help as I am completely green to welding and I am trying to save a few $$ if I am given a welder.

Is the wire speed control turned down to a very low setting?

Have you got the stitch timer turned on?

I have played around with the wire speed. I have had it on a very low setting and have also sped it up.

What do you mean by the stitch timer on? (sorry, so new but I am looking at a MIG welding school at night)

You can on some machines set it up so that when you pull the trigger the machine will pulse the wire feed (and power) on & off. Like a spot weld timer but repeating till you release the trigger.

Make sure the weld time and dwell time are switched off as shown in the manual.
