when I was young use'd to work near a small firm making wire slings and general wire rope work.....then was facinated by how they did a stretched taper'd finish with heat and some sort'a lathe.....

anyway 50 years later found this on utuuube.....
doing it the old way......interesting old guy.....
a bit hill billie but skilled and thats what matters....

something to watch over lunch....
thoughtthe wires were a bit loose on the loop end.....but what do I know.....
will find how the big boys do it with machines....

Looks similar to a Molly Hogan splice, what I find more mind blowing is when then splice braid by braid and don't use a ferrule.


Fwiw Hogan splice works all the way down to the smallest sizes of wire

Resin has replaced lead, that surprises me. I wonder how that fares up with a bit of heat.

It's amazing, they spread,bend,splice and crimp one end with a 100t press and the other end is glued on with Araldite.

Not sure why they didn't put the spelter socket on the rope before they separated the strands?

Not exactly araldite but yeah you’ve got a point.

That resin is funny stuff. It’s exothermic and if you get it on you it burns.

Doesn’t burn it’s self though. To reuse the sockets you have to get the blue spanner on them and get them really hot before it drops out. Just kind of puffs away with a sooty flame.

Not putting the wire through first is a very difficult way of doing it.

I would like to have learnt to splice them. Maybe one day.
