Wire rope minimum bending radius

Im having trouble finding the minimum recommended bending radius for small diameter wire ropes

probably 5/6mm dia maybe as much as 10... but i doubt is as swl is only 250kg

anyone know the answer to my problem?

I cant help you with your answer, but try Bridon Ropes in Newcastle. They are a wire rope manufacturer and have been going for years

I think they have a good technical department

Ive done quite a bit of work in their factory

Note that the rope construction (number of strands) as well as diameter determine the min. radius.

3x diameter is what I was always told as a quick rough and ready count ,, Try one of the sling people ,, I may have it in some of my lifting and towing manuals.

Thinking about it and looking again at the info. from loosco above, it also depends on what you want the bend for. Their info. is for rope use over pulleys (a 'moving' application), but if you look at wire rope slings (let us call them a 'static' application), there is no way they are made to those sizes.

Another way you could find out is to look at the dimensions of a 'wire rope thimble' in the appropriate diameter for your rope.

Many moons ago this question was asked on a winching course I was on, the instructor reckoned an absolute minimum pulley size of 10x the rope diameter. Depending on the rope material there is also a fatigue factor to consider. This according to him made the 1" steel rope on our tractor need a 10" diameter snatch block, the 8" one that's on there has never caused a problem in the thirty years we have used it

and if it stays bent when you take it off ,, it was too tight.
