Wire mesh

I have unveiled my firepots to the public.

We test drove one at my friends cider farm, works a treat.
needs modifying to stop embers falling out of the bottom, simple to do.
Otherwise everybody loved it, a couple of possible orders and maybe a bunch of them for somebody else.
I need to source some mesh to allow cooking on the top.
I have looked at mesh online and my brain hurts.
I need something cheap and about 1/2 to 3/4" square.
No idea of wire gauge or any of that stuff.
welded/expanded/woven? Dont know just cheap.i will weld a ring of steel around the edge to deal with nice spiky edges.
Galv or chromed? I imagine both would burn off. Mild steel?

Ouch.
Booted right in the wallet.
A tenner for about a square foot. Looks like quality stuff though.
Supermarket trolley has been used in the past.

I find F H Brundle reasonable for weld mesh. Although they do expanded also. I'd stick with self coloured, 10G at least. They also have sheets up to 6'x12' which can work out economical.

I've just ordered some today, I'll let you know.

My mate builds real nice oil-drum barbeques and he has them phosphated - stops them going rusty for a long time.

Must be <<thousands>> (probably a slight exaggeration) of old ovens and oven trays thrown out every week about the place? Also my wife has a nice cake cooling rack with 1/2" squares they can't be that expensive?

A 47 kg gas cyl when cut off fits perfectly in a 13" rim you could use the bowl for catching the ash I screwed a 3/4 bsp barrel nipple in the neck from the inside (so it stands in the middle of the bowl) then a plate over the hub hole, to allow air in but not ash out.

I wouldn't use owt with galv on it for cooking, it either wants to be chromed or preferably stainless
