Wire manufacturing tolerances.

Welder running sweet all morning, ran out of wire, put a new reel in.

Spitting, spluttering, and slipping since. Blown out the liner, few tips....
Adjusted tension and decoiler, cleaned the roller, slightly better but not much. Pressure roll seems to virtually touch the feed roll from what i can see.
Going for a different reel in the morning.

Thought perhaps it might have been wrong size wire, checked it, 1.13mm (Labelled 1.2)
Just wondering what the tolerance was, i checked a few other reels, all measured between 1.19 and 1.20.....



So what is the tolerance on wire, anyone know....?

AWS specs are on pg 38 http://www.lincolnelectric.com/assets/en_US/Products/literature/C4200.pdf. Al will probably be able to say how common it is for wire to be out of spec or which manufacturers consider AWS specs to be sloppy and work to tighter tolerances etc

Just at the bottom of pg37. Being generous then 0.002", (0.05mm) So its just a fraction under..... its half decent wire. Never had a problem with it before.

Shot in the dark... did you measure in a couple of planes i.e. could it have been ovalised instead of/as well as fractionally undersized?

Yeah, measured it a few places.

Put a part reel on from another machine that was running well....seemed to sort the problem. A dodgy spool of wire it seems.
