wire differnce

hi, have 2 mig welders running on full size bottle, both using 0.8mm wire, when welding with one the the colour of the pool is gold/brass colour and the other just look like a normal metal colour, both product a good weld and seem as strong as each other
whats the problem?

Sounds strange, whats the finished welds look like? Or do you mean the weld, not the pool?

Have you possibly got a rell of brazing wire in one of them?

not sure what wire they are, it had them in when i got them second hand, the welds look even when doing them on both machines, just one is a gold/brass colour

Sounds like you've got some mig brazing wire in one of them.... can you post up a picture of a weld with the brassy one? Is there no identification on the reel?

no need to post a pic, they look the same as the ones in the link you posted, this reel is nearly run out anyways so will keep this in mind when i get a new one. is does not have any stickers on the reel, looks like there was on in the centre of the reel but not anymore as been ripped when reel fitted, is there any problems welding with this stuff, i have welded thin sheet metal up to about 4mm box section and its always been fine, only think i did notice was with the thicker metals you had to weld it slower to get good penitration when the power was on max, this resulted in the weld being a bit to big so needed to be ground down after.

the wire is the same colour at the one shown in the link bellow, is this for brazing?

If its the brassy colour after welding, ins not mild steel welding wire, its brazing wire. Possibly a copper/silicon one.
It would look similar to the normal mild steel wire , as that has a very very thin coating of copper on it.

Id not use it up, but keep it back, its fairly expensive stuff to buy compared to standard wire.

been looking for a need reel of wire on the net, is the normal (non brazing) wire known as copper coated mild steel?

Yes. The copper coating burns off during welding. Its so thin its hardly there, its purpose is to stop the wire going rusty quickly, and it also supposed to assist in feeding i believe.
