Wire brushes - max rpm

What classifies the max rpm? Is it vibration related, or the point where bristles will start parting company quickly?

Wires will part well below the max speed. Wear a face shield!
Above max speed it may rapidly dissassemble. Not dissimilar to an oversped grinding wheel. I wouldnt recommend it!

I think the speed is just dependent on how deep you want the wires embedded in your pink bits

Eyes do not go pink.
They go red and blurry.

I wear a full face cover clear visor any time I am using a wire wheel. Doesn't matter if its a bench grinder, , angle grinder, drill or dremil.

Twist knot wheels in Grinders are particularly dangerous. I regularly pull wire strands from my leg tissue after hours of de rusting under my classic benzes.

You definitely don't want a wire wheel strand puncturing your eye or face.

Like anything, cheap means they will shed alot of bristles. I tend to buy only brand name wire wheels which shed less but still shed none the less.

The generic cheap Lidl/Aldi 5” grinders are very good for wire wheel use, they have a speed regulator (albeit a bit crude - you lose torque) which helps massively, as does the rear handle.

Was mainly wondering regarding the little 3" grinder. RPM on that is around 19000, but a lot of brushes around that size seem to be rated more around the 12000 mark. Wondered whether it was worth trying one or not?

That grinder is easier to use due to its size.

First time I used an angle grinder with wire wheel, it was a wheel from wolf metal finishing,
it was meant for the speed.
I finished using it and realised the back of my hand looked hairy, it was covered in wires stuck in the skin!
And my jeans had wires stuck in them.

But I have one of their angle grinder wire wheels on my polisher. I have worn all the wires
down and ave never noticed a stray wire from it!
Speed must effect them, the polisher is slower than a grinder.

On one memorable occasion, I fitted a new, large cup brush to my 4 1/2" grinder and forgot to set the speed to the minimum before starting it.

It returned to its component parts in spectacular fashion before the grinder got up to full speed.

I think it was rated for c.6000rpm.

If you use them well below the max speed, its rare that any wires fly out. However I rarely use them, usually theres a better tool for a job.

I've used Dremel wire brushes in a little pneumatic die grinder, I'm pretty sure the brushes are rated to 35k and the grinder to 70k rpm. The grinder probably doesn't make it up to 70k with a brush in it, but certainly faster than 35, I didn't have any problems with balance or losing bristles. They were expensive though, I've used cheaper brushes and they lost the bristles very fast.

The cup brush I've got as a potential test one is a Bosch. Went with a decent branded one to rule out quality issues. Will need to make a M5 to M10 adapter though. Gave up on trying to find a branded one with a 10mm through hole.

Thought it best to check before turning an adapter, as to whether the whole idea may be doomed from the outset. It's sounding like it's simply going to be a suck it & see scenario?

Had one let go on a 9 inch.. it peeled the big rivet holding the cup together ..managed to notice before things got bloody
