Windscreen wiper motor as a rotating table?

I spotted the earlier post about someone looking for a repaired / replacement wiper motor and it got me to thinking that these are;

1. low cost
2. low rpm
3. high(ish) torque

Would one of these work as a welding rotating table?

You could buy a cheap speed controller from eBay. I've got one for a future project, putting an electric drive on my feed screw, and it seems to work quite well. Cost under a fiver I seem to recall.

yes you could but you would need a gearbox to lower the speed or if your lucky it might work just as it is

I'm hoping that a rear wiper motor is more straightforward as it won't have multiple windings / speeds.

I've got a couple of spare brake disks that I can use as a turntable - will post a vid when it either works or it doesn't!

That's what I'm thinking! Or a PC PSU with PS_ON shorted, or one of the many laptop supplies I've got lying around!

To be honest, your suggestion of a CB PSU might be the easiest as I'm not sure what switched mode PSUs and a PWM speed controller will think of each other...

Anyways - if you have to find a voltage, then 12VDC is the easiest one to find

In a previous job we used to import cheap welding turntables and they looked suspiciously like a wiper motor with a simple speed controller.

I used to use a very old AT power supply as a 12v bench supply a few years ago, and it would trip out if you tried to use too much current (inrush current), at at the time I was using it to power a windscreen wiper motor. if you're using a pwm controller, hopefully that wont be an issue.

I now use a 10A transformer bench supply and dont have the issue with it tripping out....and slightly off topic, here's a couple of weeks ago using it with a wiper motor. I am wanting 2 speed and intermittant wipers and electric wash for my Triumph Herald, rather than the single speed speed and manual pump that they come with. as there isn't any load this while testing, it was only drawing a couple of amps.

back on topic,

when I motorized my bead roller using a similar pwm motor supply to yours on 12V, I ended up having this set up with high current switching using relays, and a momentary switch for reverse/forward.

but as its likely to be a lower current draw for your requirements you should be able to get a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) switch and wire it like this to reverse direction

What a total plank I am... Instead of ordering a wiper motor on its own I ordered a complete assembly, thinking "it's already got a shaft so I can just connect straight to that". £6.50 later and a second hand Ford unit pitched up last week so I went to play with it today.

Do your windscreen wipers go round and round and round? No, of course they don't - they go whish...whosh...whish...whosh...whish...whosh, which is, of course, exactly what the shaft on the unit does! 180 degrees in one direction, 180 in reverse, rinse, repeat. Pillock

Anyways, I have now performed surgery to remove the wiper gubbins and so on to the next step
