Can anyone advise me with a slight problem I am having.(This is one for the computer experts out there).I have downloaded a PDF and I want to highlight and send certain parts of it to a friend.I don`t have"Office".Can this be done? I have been trying for ages without success.

You will probably need a pdf reader, or a free pdf editor. I have the full version on my laptop, so I can edit pdf's so I'm not sure what you can/can't do with the free version.

I'm sure there will be some free version that allows you to do this though.

It may be tricky if it's scanned in and contains no real "Text" - eg if it was a document created in word or similar and then exported to pdf format it should be easier.

My favourite .pdf reader is Foxit, which I stick to the old versions of. I get it from oldversion.com or one of the legacy software sites. I've just checked and the version I'm using just now 4.3.1 allows me to select text and portions and send them anywhere I like.

as long as the pdf isn't copy protected you should be able to copy and paste bits of it directly into an email

if its an image and you only want part then you could copy it into paint and select and copy the part you want in there and then paste into the email

if you get really stuck adjust the PDF display to include everything you want, Shift-Ctrl-Prtscn and then paste it into paint as above

I prefer adobe acrobat reader from adobe.com but Microsoft only want their Edge browser to display PDF files so whatever you set as the default will regularly revert to Edge, sigh

You can use a program like pdFill pdf tools to split out whole pages from any PDF. It'll also install a virtual printer which will let you print just about anything as a PDF, saved on your PC (instead of spitting out a printed page from a printer).

If you just want to take a single excerpt from a page you could just use the snipping tool and save it as an image.

I often need to copy text from .pdf files and sites that wont let you use copy, I have a a program called ShareX which allows you to capture text using optical character recognition, then you can paste it into other software.
