Good point, always had pro so never thought about that, however unless you need the pro bits it doesn't matter?

Officially the free upgrade is no longer available, but it is.

Essentially you need the MS windows media download tool, run it on the computer you want to update, and job done.

group policy is the most annoying thing missing from home.
Most, if not all, group policy objects can be recreated with registry changes. Admittedly it is a ball ache, but it gets you to where you need to be, and you (normally) only have to do it once.

Hah. I paid good money for a W10 licence and was utterly pee'd off with the crap that came with it.
So, I downloaded a copy of Long Term Stable Branch (name since changed) and installed that with Auto-KMS to keep it activated.
It's great; no crap and runs fine, exactly like it's supposed to do.
It's what I wanted to buy in the first place.

Just buy a key off a dodgy website to activate it, they aren't too expensive and have worked a few times for me.
I think I paid £63 for an OEM copy of win10 pro on amazon last year, and it was completely absent of bloatware.

There might be some confusion over versions of Windows versus editions of Windows.
As stated above, upgrading from an installed version of Win7 to Win10 should succeed, and the edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise) should survive the upgrade assuming the original Windows 7 key was valid / legal etc.
Someone mentioned above the support end-of-life of Windows 7 - ignore that as it's immaterial. Right now (with not Windows O/S greater than Win10) Microsoft support an upgrade path from Win7 and Win8 to Win10. There are no signs of that changing, and it's not in Microsoft's interest to change that, and the support lifecycle of Win7/8 is immaterial to the upgrade position.
The thornier question is changing edition from (for example) Home Edition to Professional or Enterprise. That is its own whole tin of worms and, while Microsoft previously offered an amnesty, they are now far less forgiving of people trying to take the cheap route from Home to better-than-Home editions. There are a variety of ebay/amazon sellers who offer cheap activation keys but in my literal experience, these work maybe 1-in-3 times.
My main advice is that if you already have a Win7 or Win8 licence, no matter the edition, it should work with Windows 10 if you want to upgrade albeit it won't change the edition of Windows you get.
