Windows 10 new mobo

What is the forum consensus on installing a replacement mobo and just fitting the old SSD with the old OS on it.

My plan is to fit a clean SSD but have it dual boot with a clean install of wondows 11.

I just wondered how the old drive with windows 10 on will cope. The main reason i want to keep the old OS running is so i can make a list of installed programs and also get access to keys for the bitsdujour software that you get free but can only install once.

Insider tip: Windows 10 and Windows 11 are effectively the same operating system. Microsoft talked for ages about "Windows 10 being the last ever version of Windows", with perpetual updates but at some point Marketing got involved and it ended up being Windows 11.

When Win11 launched (and since then), there have been no new kernel ABI (Application Binary Interface), no new user mode driver models, and no difference to WHQL (Windows Hardware Qualifying aka hardware compatibility) specs.

There were, of course, UI changes and some security policies have been tightened (which would have happened if it had been called Windows 10 v2023, v2024, v2025 etc.) but as far as 99.999% of hardware and software are concerned, there is zero effective difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Make sure you disable bitlocker (if it is enabled) before you swap anything.

As long as the boot modes are set the same, it will usually work. The biggest issue you may encounter is windows activation but that won't matter for your purpose.
