Window security bars

I've got to make up some bars to secure some windows. My thoughts so far have been along the lines of 12mm round bar at 100mm centres, with an equal angle frame, and a length of flat running across the middle, with the bars through it.

can anyone give some guidance the size of the round bar? is that ok or should I go larger?

I'd go for 16mm dia - its a bit more chunky. 12mm will probably be ok as long as the distance between the angle frame and the flat bar isnt too great. 12mm can fairly easily be bent by hand.

Hmm, confirmed my latest thoughts. angle to flat bar distance is 400-500mm

16mm is the minimum required by most insurance companies, some are asking for 20mm

I installed a welding machine to make prison bars made of box section tube and each edge was filled with tungten and cap welded. They showed how effective by turning a grinding wheel to dust on it!

As for window bars I have use 20mm conduit welded to flat bar to secure my shed / garage windows.

workshop, on the inside. Required for insurance purposes, though they haven't stated minimum thickness, but after Paul's comment I will get back to them and check.

Go overkill then, 20mm round, 50 x 10 flat bar frame and 100mm centres.
End of the day, the people who break into workshops are pikeys who will just wrap a chain round them and tug it with their cabstar so doesn't matter what you do really!

Fortunately, none of the windows face an area where vehicle access is possible.

The next issue is what to do with the roller-shutter door, but i've got some plans for that.

depending how wide the door is, a length of box section that drops onto the angle iron 'base' of the door (to sandwich it down to the floor), which slides over a pin on the runner each end. whack a lock on each end and job done

The door's too wide to do that, really. I've got some plans but i'd rather not discuss them in detail on here - paranoid or what!! :P
