Window Frames

Just thinking ahead, Has anyone made steel window frames for double glazing?

I'm thinking about using some angle to make them might not be a bad idea

Any info would be great

Just to put this into perspective, I intend to fit larger windows to a steel hull narrowboat

Not fully decided yet, But being fixed I would imagine less chance of leaking

I plan to have a side hatch that opens up, The roof will have vents

Not even bought a boat yet

But I have ideas & visions

I made a couple of these for the workshop though not double glazed, 20mm box outer frame, then 20x3 angle inner frame with 20x3 T section for the glazing bars. Fine for a workshop but no thermal break, which you’ll need to think about for a boat.

@Mick Annick My main concern is keeping them square & also welding on the outer edge to save grinding back afterwards

Will have to do some maths as it might not be the most cost effective approach

Clamp them down weld 10mm at a time

Is premade Ali extrusion not more cost effective and a better heat barrier as opposed to steel

Give Crittalls a call-- though do make sure you're sitting down when the quote comes.

As above you do need some sort of thermal break, and you do need to find a way to keep them flat whilst welding. As I understand it, Crittalls roll the welded frame back through heated rollers to remove all the tension.

I had mine clamped down to the bench, followed by a bit of post production fettling with a hammer

Yes, they tend to have a plastic layer bonded in the middle.
