will my xti160 run a 6011?

want to try some different rods, will be getting a box of 7018 and a box of decent 6013 when i get paid, but been watching jody's vid about different rods and he said 6011 will run on most inverters...

i thought they needed a properly heavy duty set up to be run

Your welder should be fine, it is 6010 that are fussy.

Esab nu5 are the ones to look out for. They are pretty much the only ones available in the UK. A seller on eBay has small handfuls of 3.2 ones for sale, or at least he did last time I looked...

They can be used as a universal rod for all work, they are high penetration, fast freeze, minimal slag. Work well on open root, rusty stuff, paint etc. They're excellent rods.

once you get used to using them, doubt you'll go back to 6013. I haven't...

As Hugh says, the only thing he didn't mention is that they're able (and brilliant) to do vertical down - a totally different experience.

Cells are a different breed of rod compared with industry standard 6013/7018. Fair enough, if you get your hands on a few, try them out. You would be far better receiving a practical demo on pipe, which cells were designed for.

For example, when I am rooting pipe with a cell, my prep parameters differ. Once root is complete, I remove slag using a grinder, not too, heavy, to thin out root. Then cap according to WPS.

Get some, have fun, but you will be frustrated not having a practical demo nailing with cells.

provided you can actually learn through watching educational videos, you'll pick up the open root 6010/11 concepts from YouTube. They're not rocket science to use...

There is a bucket load of 6010 open root stuff on YouTube mainly because 6010/7018 is the standard in the US, pipe, plate, structural (a bit)... 6013 is rare.

open root with 6010 is a piece of **** compared to 6013... gaps and amps right, jam it in, run it down... helps if you have a power source with a nice droop to the v/a curve and a remote...

I wasn't a fan of doing it with 6013...it wasn't part of our course but most of us could either weld ok enough before we went or picked it up really quickly so we had some free time so they set up some open root joints but only had 6013 rods that we could use. Also did a bit of autogenous tig on stainless and some mig to pass the time

Not sure if it was my technique, or the rods, or both but the slag just wouldn't push back and kept covering the puddle as we were welding and just wouldn't come off even after the weld had started to cool.

Do 6011 restart easily? I know 7018 don't but I think I was told that's because of the flux on the end of the rod?

I give my lads the option to either root with a 13 or 10. I demo first, of course. Most, if not all will root and cap with a 13. Cumulating with a final weld test to H&V TR5 standard, 4" dia pipe @ 6G.

When I am weld testing out tradesmen to same standard, again same option, 99.9% will use 6013's all the way. I really do not understand using 6013's for rooting can be horrible???

I can't be arsed to spend the hours learning the finer points of open root with 6013 when I can just grab a 6011 and get the open root jobs I need to do, done, with no prior training and about 12" of practice welds... Cells just get the job done, easily, with no fuss... Obviously we are talking downhand and stoving here...

I would have thought anyone would prefer to be really good, rather than just good. A really good welder will work the magic, regardless of rod spec.
