Wildlife pond.

I wonder how many creatures that provided a habit and source of water for over all those years? So few gardens have any sort of diversity now, the current trend seems to be laying a kitchen floor outside and sticking furniture on it or covering everything in plastic grass which not only manages to look crap but makes a mockery of environmental regulations in the building regs.

I know it startled our dog when she ran straight over it thinking it was grass as it was green good job there was a hose outside the kitchen.

I've put up a trellis fence between the wildlife area and the rest of the garden otherwise there'd be nothing left in the pond with Neo splashing around in it every time you turned your back.

We had five badgers up there the other night scoffing peanuts and nosing about. They all had a drink from the pond before waddling off, and the birds are in and out of it all day. I must get a book so that I can put names to them as I can only identify about 1/3 of them.

I think it may be a toad rather than a frog who's moved in?

A mate of mine wanted to build a pond in his garden, I had an old fibreglass 18ft EOD sailing dinghy that was uneconomic to restore, I sold him the hull for £50, he dug a hole same shape as the boat plopped it in the hole & used the mud from the hole to ramp up the sides to the deck. Result no muckaway & once the deck was cut away an 18ft by 7ft pond liner.. Plenty of cheap or free grp hulls about to make pond liners!

I keep my eye out for an old tender or similar to shove in the garden as a feature/planter/seat. Not seen any at all but given I'm about as far as it's possible to get from the sea it's not too surprising I suppose.

One definition I heard was a lake has water flowing into and out of it. A pond only has water flowing into it.

There seems to be quite a few definitions/distinctions depending on who you ask. The good news with that is you can't be wrong.

Its worth getting a bit of depth, helps critters stay alive when it freezes over. I can't remember the recommended depth now, but at least a good couple of foot springs to mind.

Nope, that's a frog

Toads have much bumpier skin and are not usually in the water, more in damp places.
Only time they usually are in water is during mating, so give them some space...
( Oh, and they have a tendency to drive far too fast )

bloke where i was working had a small pond in his back garden/ 2 ducks took up residence and nested under a bush laying eggs 4 chicks hatched out it was funny to watch them all trying to get in the pond as it was only 3 foot across

The last couple of winters haven't been very cold. The pond had about 1/2" max of ice on it last winter and everything's used to it so no worries.

another where i was working spent 20 grand on getting the garden landscaped and a pond put in with waterfall and nice garden lights at the end of the garden i said to the punter it will be nice next year getting newts and frogs in it when its established . she said sertainly NOT i dont want frogs in it soft cow theres no hope for some folk. i get the odd toad and frogs in the damp patches in garden . nice to see them

I made myself VERY unpopular a few years back when we were looking at a barn conversion job. Wandering round it I spotted a great crested newt running between some stacked tiles so I let the surveyor know that it was there. Delayed the conversion by 18 months. Sure it's a pain, but newts are endangered entitled tossers buying derelict barns aren't. Deeply unpleasant man, but I managed to upset him twice without even getting to the quote stage.

The newt thing, but the first was when his wife sent a text for him to me "Can't wait to see you later. Love you, Sue". I couldn't help myself, so I replied "Well this is all very sudden you fast Minx!" I've still got the text.
