wide screen tv

Seeing the 40 inch TV thread made me remember to ask a question.

Although I have an 800 quid Panasonic it's not wide screen so when they broadcast F1 quality the laptimes are shown but the drivers names are cut off. I am watching via a virgin box and can not see how to alter settings so I can see all the screen even if I loose a bit off the top and bottom.

If it's not a wide-screen won't it already be in 4:3 ratio ? 16:9 will put it in wide-screen but it will have band top and bottom.

Point is, no matter what it's set to, or what the picture is being transmitted in, you want to find the button that allows you to set "Aspect Ratio"

Hopefully there's an "auto" setting - most programmes should be transmitting the aspect ration info.

If it really is 4:3 aspect cathode ray tv (mid 90s I would guess) you won't be able to do anything with the picture aspect on the set and I doubt very much the VM box will have a 4:3 setting and even if it did the gain you would get by see the times would be lost by the horrendous squashed picture.

Personally I would bite the bullet and get a new tv, even the cheapest make would blow a mid 90s tv away especially as the cathode ray tv sets pictures deteriorated with age.

That tv is widescreen it must be the settings in your box that need altering. Does the display show correctly when you use the built in freeview ? (if you have an aerial connection)

I have a Panasonic Viera and running it through Virgin media.

On the V box controller press Home.
Go down to No 7 .... Settings.
Then go down to 4 .... display & audio settings.
Then change display to 1080 wide.

Exactly the same as mine (except my label is the right way up )

Top/left hand corner of the remote control, under the power button, 2nd along - marked "ASPECT".

Press that and start with "Auto". Failing that, select the appropriate ratio but then you'll need to change it when the programme's ratio changes.

Actually thinking about it when I watch football at times the ball is out of view but obviously on the correct screen it would be visible.....

As said by pedrobedro it's wide screen 16:9 not 4:3 which would have taken you back to the 90s. What have you got it set on auto / 16:9 / fill? You may even have to reset the screen if someone have messed around with resizing to fix the problem you have.

I think every regional paper had their own version of it at one time.
I also recall being told by a journalist who worked for the paper at the time, that it was rigged to beggary and back. The main beneficiaries were family friends and relatives of staff.
