Sorry as this a moan.

I have been here 5 years.now and had two pay rises. Amounting to £12.60ph. Last four years I am doing general maintenance. Design and make jigs. Tooling and equipment. Look after.the lads when they need stuff. Go out to look at jo s thay need making. Desgin order build them. Order equipment needed.
Plus more.

I like to do this stuff but I think time has come. I don't think i am asking to much for a decent pay rise am I?

The foreman asked for.another fully enclosed system for the auto welder.
I came up with this. He is over the moon with it. All. for H&S again so non welders can use it more safely than the last one I built.

This will be fully welded up and painted next week.

If its 12.60 total rate then that's pretty poor, need to add minimum 4 quid to that.

If you sold your skills elsewhere what would they pay…..seems far too low to me..

Just think what that would have cost to design and build externally.

That's a joke for your skill
Design and implementing , jigs, other tooling and maintenance.
Have you had a quiet word with the man who is in charge, our guys are on £16 to start, not the same industry and not your skill level

If they don’t realise someone who can design and make that is worth more than minimum wage you need to find a better place to work.

That if that's your hourly rate is piddle poor!
For that kind of technical and mechanical design you should be on at least £50-90 p/h.
Are you building it yourself as well.
I would leave on good terms and when they beg you not to say it's ok I'm going self employed freelance, if you want me here are my terms and conditions!

I have a friend of a friend who did the above and is now working for multiple companies and making a fortune, not working every day, playing a lot of golf and meeting more directors in the process and gaining new customers.
He was on £35 p/h before he handed his notice in.
He charges £120 an hour now, all consultancy work.

One thing I have learned from being underpaid and employed some 20 years ago.
Never undervalue your skills, they are worth more than you think!
I have been self employed for a long time, and it's had its ups and downs I will admit.
Some of that due to never having advertised my services!

But I am and have been in such a happy place for 20 years now and built up an amazing customer base that keeps growing and a reputation for consistent quality work.
And that is all you need a good reputation, it goes a very long way!

Do you have other options available, could you put out some feelers out, if there is a possibility of a start else where, or go the the boss and let him know your thinking about handing in your notice, they might offer you a rise, but then the question is why did they not value your work before you threatened to leave.... if you enjoy the work and would stick around with a rise all good and well, vey often or not it could be thought of as a slap in the face or an insult to get offered a rise once you mention your planning leaving.

For your level of skill i would be asking more, you obviously have a good eye for what you do.
As someone who used to be on the shop floor doing similar work, Its easy to be taken for granted.
your only other option is to find another job, as sometimes people are shy of change, especially when it involves the wallet

I'm not much above what you earn, it's all well and good quoting £50 - 60 per hour or £120, but that's what is being charged to people by bosses, not to what people earn, unless self employed, then you've all your costs/taxes/overheads.

I think location is a big factor in wages. My hourly rate up here is approximately 2/3 of what is was in Buckinghamshire.
Technically I am doing the same job for less money but companies are not paying the same across the country.

Northern England with that skillset you'd be on £16 minimum. Up to £22 depending on employer and job description.

Experienced tig welders £13p/h – I think a lot depends on location.

I saw a position the other day where they wanted an experienced maintenance person to both work on the production line and repair the production machinery, using their own tools, minimum 40 hours a week, on call weekends, for £12.60 per hour.

The job market is a complete joke, and I fear it’s only going to get worse as the companies get squeezed with NI. I can see the entire nation working for minimum wage.
Unfortunately, the only way to get a pay rise in the modern world is to chop and change jobs/employers to work yourself up the greasy pole.
That’s not easy to do in the current job market either. But loyalty and work ethic are no longer valued.
Everybody wants to pay the minimum possible, and moan people only put in the minimum possible effort.

Spot on - record numbers of businesses going through. I would LOVE to give my staff more wages but it is a struggle to keep up with all the taxes we have to pay these days. Along with the most expensive industrial electricity in the World something has to give
People moan about the likes of Amazon not paying UK taxes - I wonder what their commercial rates bills are like? Along with their NI and everything else we get screwed for? Corporation tax is just ONE tax. I would love to be in a position to pay it but profit is a dirty word these days - nobody wants you to make one!
