why is it when the batterys run out in your fire alarms is it in the middle of the night

as above had a carp nights sleep fire alarms started going off at 1,30 in the morning weng out side on the landing and hushed it cheaked the house nothing

2 hours later same again came to me the batterys are prob on there way out did considder removing the alarms as we got 4 over the house and all linked so all go off when actavated but know if you got no fire alarms and you have a fire your not insured

then again near 2 hours later and then 40 mins later

i have had this 3 times over my life twice in our last house (in the middle of the night i went and got a battery from petrol station at a cost of £4 that was 12 years ago)so replaced with lithium battery ones
these ran out a year before we moved out same in the midlle of the night had to take them off as cant replace the battery and smash them as you cant remove the battery then had no fire alarms untill i got replacements i reinstalled 9v battery ones as at least you can get the battery

and then last night in the middle of the night all my fire alarms over the last 15 years are hard wired so do not use battery they are back up only why ddo they not show when gone off a light to say what one went off as when there linked you dont know what one is causing the problem

the best bit of all this the kids slept through all of the fire alarms and this morning as i got upfor the last alarm just befor 6 i said will get some batterys to day otherhalf said down stairs in the drawer is some of those batterys aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's because it gets cold at night and the batteries have less voltage.

It's a good opportunity to have a fire drill. First time mine went off in the middle of the night I wondered downstairs completely naked to check for fires. Not the best outfit for fire fighting or a quick exit. Last time I put clothes on, went down and there really was a fire - Chinese thing left on charge. The spider living in the sensor had trained me well!

The battery voltage is monitored carefully looking for an overall reducing trend and particularly relatively sharply shaped downward dip. These downward trends are accelerated when the ambient temperature is lower for example autumn and night times.

new every 4 years i only put them in 2 years ago

every 4 years better to not have a fire

The batteries are sized to the sites and panel requirements.

If failed after 2 years it is either:
Cheep batteries.
Wrong size batteries.
Fault panel.


The service engineer should be able to advise.

ah this is not a panal unit just cheapy battery types but powered by mains linked with a single cable

Yea my last ones did there are fire angle not that bad a make daughter did say they went off again after I had replaced 2 of the battery one still had 10.6 volts in it but the battery is still 2 and a bit years old so got some new battery to day will replace the other one as well hope that will sort it paid 60 ish for the 3 units and a mate give me a heat alarm for the kitchen one top stairs one bottem stairs and one in the back room/ cover extension
