Why does this happen?...

When I am welding 12mm mild steel plate everything goes well and as expected but once I have to weld the same sort of piece that has been galv dipped the metal seems to get eaten into by the welding and fizzes. The settings remain the same but the metal burns away.

Any reasons?

did you clean off the galv properly first

Yes, you can't weld galvanised steel. Grind it off first.

Fumes from welding galvanised are hazourdous as well!!

Yeh, had the galvie flue last yeay, sore head, feeling sick and every muscle in your body aches, wear a good quality mask when grinding it !

There is a video somewhere on the interweb of some poor guy saying "By the time you see this, I will have died through welding galv and breathing in the fumes"

It gives off similar sort of gas they used in First World War trenches.

I had a fairly serious dose of metal fume fever after casting brass a couple of years ago. I didn't use a cover flux and the zinc was burning in the crucible. I felt like I had really bad flu for about 24 hours. Needless to say I have modified my casting technique somewhat since then.

hello ,
you should always grind off the galv back too bare metal preferably using a stone grinding disc in the area to be welded.otherwise the weld will not take and it will be imposable to weld and you will dissapeare in a green glow and loads of poisonous fumes.
