Looks like a Butters Automig 180, can still get spares has it a nameplate on the back?

all i can find are some stickers on the back that read: ALLWELD SUPPLIES
and a plate next to the wire drive unit that reads: NBC Welding equipment
the seller said that it was 160 amps
the wire speed is automatic but has a fine control
the power has six steps 1 to 5 for mig and 6 is spot welding the interval timer is below it

so would it be a a Butters Automig 180?
if so would you have the specs for this machine and where would i get parts for it

Your not wrong there
I had a look under the fibre glass covers (they just slide up & off)
On the left hand side facing the front are most of the electrics and on the other side as you said a motor the size of a house brick
I had a search for butters on the net and could not find many old ones
They seem to always come in an orange colour so must be made by them
Does anyone have any info on this one as I would be nice to know what model it is
It’s a great machine and I can get away with welding very thin steel

I phoned Allweld Supplies today
but they were not able to give me much info on it
i've only see one other for sale on eBay a little while back
has anyone owned or used one of these machines in the past
or know where i would find out more about it ?

You could find out the voltage settings by putting a voltmeter across the torch and earth and pulling the trigger. Turn the selector and take a note of the reading at each position. The amps are variable according to wire speed, stickout, arc length etc. You're looking for volts in the mid teens for fine work, and up to the mid twentys for 6mm welds, or so.
DIYWelding has probably told you as much as anyone round here knows about the model, and it's probably the same as the one one ebay a few weeks ago.
I think you're just going to have to find out what it can do the empirical way!

btw, The company that made this (as mentioned above) was NBC, or Norman Butter and Company, Coventry. There is no mention of them whatsoever on the internet. I don't know when they went down, but the engineering firm I worked for in the '80s had a lot of NBC sets. I now have a 300A NBC set and it is a lovely piece of kit. It welds smooth as a babys bum and is built like a brick sh!thouse.
Yours will have been made specifically for the auto repair market and is probably pushing 30 years of age. I'd suggest you look after it and treat it nice, cos it's miles better than anything you could buy from Clarke or Sip. You've only to appreciate the cost of that wire feed motor alone to see what a well engineered thing it is (though i'm not so sure about the fibreglass side panels! - makes me think of Reliant Robins rather than expensive yachts)

Is the price fair or is the seller asking a bit much for it (i got mine at a bargain Basement price)

Bit expensive this is quite a old machine if you are prepared to spend this type of cash better going for a new Butters or a Portamig

Main problem is spares, Butters do not stock any spares for that unit even feed rollers are a problem

i thought as much
i must have been very lucky to get mine at the price i did (£80) with a brand new Parweld Torch and a roll of wire thrown in
we'll have to find something like a Portamig for him
