Which welder?

Hi,
Ive got a land rover discovery that requires some 'glueing' back together. The chassis appears solid, so its just the bodyshell, 2mm steel I think. I will be bobtailing it/ making it a pickup at the same time, lots of welding should be happening. Before starting on the body, I need to learn to weld first, have been reading many topics on the fourm for good tips. The thickest I'd need to weld would be 3mm at the most. We have a biggish murex tradesmig at work for anything thicker than that

Ive been looking at the clarke range of welders, which model would people say would be suitable? Have already got a full size gas bottle to go with it. Im watching a Clarke 90 on ebay, would that be big enough?

I would say a Clarke 135 as minimum for 3mm, but a 150/151/160 would be better.

Hi Joe..Agree as above, a 90 is just a bit too small if you are doing 3mm runs, a 150 would be a much better buy.

hi there Joe, Im doing exactly the same to my Disco this summer, pick up and bobtail, are you running a project thread anywhere? also which landy sites are you using?, im on the zone.

When do you start yours? im just waiting for the weather to pick up and then its out with the grinder.

You could probably get away with using the work one, but that depends on the size of the work one, it's probably better at bodywork than a small clarke, our 250amp work one is fine,

I guess what I am saying is that if you need one, then you need a good one, as your going to be sorely disappointed with a hobby one, after using the work one, the clarkes are good entry level hobby ones, that many are happy with though!

Thanks for the advice folks, I will keep my eye out for either a 135/150/160 then

I was thinking about using the welder at work, but that would mean a lot of hassle shifting the vehicle down their, and a lot of hassle to shift it quickly while it was at work. Its a 3 phase, so I cant bring it home with me, which is why im wanting one to use at home

I havent got a thread going anywhere yet about the build, but I will do one on here once I begin. Firstly I need to practise on some scrap steel. I'll be needing somebody to tig weld me the outer skin when its nearly done
