which Tig Welder?

Firstly, hello!! Im new on here and hopefully about to purchase my first welder. so be gentle.

A little about me first, as im guessing it may help.

Ive done quite abit of welding in the past, my dad taught me how to arc and gas weld when i was young. In the past couple of years i worked for a motorsport company and had access to a very high quality tig AC/DC welder. I was lucky enough to be taught to get my welding to quite a good standard, alluminium not so much . but now i have changed jobs i need to get myself a welder.

So heres the crap part, ive only got £400ish to spend, so i know this rules out alot of machines! I understand it will have to be just dc, but i can cope with this for now.

I learnt with a pedal so ideally the welder would have the option for a pedal, even if i bought this at a later point.

It needs to be 240V and ideally 13amp. i dont require arc/plasma etc i just want it to be tig with as much adjustabily and quality as possible.

ive looked at a few on the net but dont really know whats a good brand and whats not.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated!!

In your budget it will need to be a used TIG. MOst will be transformer and will not run on 13A.

I suspect that your budget is the reason for the lack of replies, (most unusual on here). you will be limited to a basic scratch start set at that sort of money, another £100 or so would get you something like the Tec-ARC 186i,
Alternatively you would need to look for a known brand second hand machine, but they soon get snapped up and will have no warranty.
I'd look to spend a bit more and get the warranty and support.

R-Tech do a 160Amp DC TIG which will run on a 13A supply for £299 + VAT (£351.33 inc. VAT) and a 200Amp machine for £395.00 +VAT ( £ 464.13 inc VAT) Both machines will take a foot pedal, and are supplied with a gas reg. and a quality torch.

I use their 200A AC/DC machine at school and it's a very nice machine, probably not up to Lorch Standards, but it's less than half it's price.

Ive looked at these, the spec seems good! but ive never heard the name before, The 200A looks good for the money, but requires 22A and im not sure the garages electrics could handle it!

FWIW, I run a 200A AC/DC TIG, 200A MIG, MMA140 inverter and a MMA160 inverter from R-Tech in the school workshop, and find them to be great bits of kit, and very reasonably priced for the quality you recieve.

Just bought an R-Tech 160A as I had a similar budget and needed something to run from a UK plug. I've only used it once so far and it seems ok. However, they don't take a foot pedal it has a thumb switch on the torch to turn on/off

They do sometimes have shop spoiled welders on ebay.

Cheers for the responses people, very helpfull. i think im going to keep my eye out for a shop soiled on ebay as just missed out on one i was watching. from the response the r tech seem to be creating a good reputation for the lower end budget!

Try giving them a bell, if they have a shop soiled machine, I'm sure they'd prefer to sell direct than to pay e-bay's seller fees, you've nothing to loose either way. The guy you need to talk to is Dylan Emery.
