First test: Is it magnetic or non-magnetic?

That will divide the unknowns by about 2!

2nd Question: Is it sheet/bar stock/structural section ?

OK, Now I'm struggling to narrow down the alloy

If I had no idea what it was and the fabrication wasnt a critical part I would choose 309L

They are usually 304 if its an old car

Be very careful I tried to weld some Ford hub caps from I guess the early 20s. You couldn't tell but the Stainless was paper thin, formed over a centre cap. So you will need far far less Ampage than you think

Yep they are extremely thin, think fag paper . Also not all Ford caps are pure stainless, The stuff some are made of escapes me at the moment.

Ey it damn well escaped me as well in a puff of smoke. Luckily he wanted the logos filling in, to put on another build, so I managed to do the job, wasn't easy I can tell you
