i'm thinking of replacing my old van with a sprinter,but am unsure how new to look at as i don't want anything with electronics /dmf & do they all have a timing chain rather than a belt,my driving includes lots of short runs mainly on rural/back lanes ,never m/ways.opinions based on experience would be helpful ,thanks.

I've got an 03 mwb high top 311.
It has a chain and a dmf.
You can get dmf replacements when they go. bits from somewhere like euro car parts are alot cheaper than merc genuine.
Electronics I have got friendly with a fleet service palce who have all the gear.
I wouldn't worry about the non-motorway stuff lots of couriers use them and they never leave the urban environment.
Biggest problem is rust, which looks rubbish but, touch wood, isn't a problem with mine yet.

Ive just spent months on the exact same problem. I used to drive a 54 plate 311 when employed and loved it but to find a clean one now is nigh on impossible. The ones that are in good condition come in at the same price range as a newer shape sprinter on plates between 06-09 (condition varying obviously). After much deliberation I opted for an 08 311 (ex DPD). As I do mainly motorway runs, the issue with the DPF didnt put me off plus my mate has the equipment to regenerate it as and when needed. Albeit the panels had a few dents but another pal of mine repaired and painted it while I fitted new sills to his connect.
If you do short runs I would suggest the older model but spend around £4k for a minter.
Heres mine after paint and full polish. I paid £4200 for it with 150,000 and a shed load of history
