Which spray gun

After painting a recent project using aerosol cans, which were garbage, I've decided I should try spraying using a proper gun. Having never tried it I'm as green as can be but willing to learn.

I mostly use single pack zinc rich primer or similar and single pack machinery enamel paints, Tractol from Smith & Allen being the most recent, so I'd be looking at something suitable for that sort of paints. Also I tend to do lots of small bits, such as lathe parts or other machinery with occasional larger items.

Budget is probably around £50 max, so lets hear from you guys what you would be getting for that kind of money, or hopefully a bit less.

Fast Mover LVLP gun with 1.8 and 1.3 nozzles. Ideal for small parts and panels, but slow for complete cars. Low overspray and minimal compressor requirements. Don't expect to be able to service any gun at that price point though. When it dies, it's dead.

Ok thanks. I hopefully wont be painting anything as large as a car so a smaller gun is fine at the minute. What dies on these guns and how much more expensive is a serviceable one?

I'd also suggest one of the fast mover guns, your budget will get you a 1.4mm gun. That should be enough to get you started, I use a 1.4 gun for nearly everything. You'll have to thin the paint a bit more to get it to spray, especially primers.

You'll also need to budget for all the other stuff like a decent mask & other ppe, mixing cups, filters, gun holder, decent airline filter/regulator & a gun regulator.

Any particular gun from Fast Mover? they seem to do a few in 1.4mm

I have at least 3 of the Sealy guns......all copies of the DeVillbis JGA.......they are spot on....
2 are the pot type and 1 has the cup on the top (just for small jobs)
the last time I bought a JGA they were over 2 hundred quid........
HVLP guns seem to be the future but cost a fair bit and there's a little to learn in setting them up, but not so bad......
but with the older suction guns it's just Grab n Go.....

If your painting machinery that will be used for its intended purpose then I don't mind having a go. If its something that has to be done properly for showing or a car etc then I certainly would leave it to someone else.

fast mover ones are good enough , ive got expensive ones too and usually grab the fast mover

The lowest price serviceable gun I found was just over £100 and was a clone of an Iwata or whatever they are called! Sprayguns Direct had them a couple of years ago. The FM guns eventually start passing air all the time. Still useable but annoying hearing the air escaping when doing nothing.

Completely agree with LVLP for a beginner I use these https://gtair.co.uk/spray-guns/369-burisch-gtr500-lvlp-18mm-spray-gun.html and for the money they are excellent. Just get an in line filter and pressure gauge and you can't go wrong

I use a fast mover too, just the mini gun as i only use it to spray small stuff. Its been very good and i am not an expert spray painter by any means. It did have a hard time spraying epoxy primer. I would not worry too much about longevity, they are cheap enough to bin every few years when they start giving trouble, leaking air or whatever.
