Which spray gun - nozzle size, etc ?

I am looking to do some spraying on my resto project BMW 02. I will be doing the primer (epoxy and filler) and topcoats (basecoat/lacquer) on the interior and engine bay.

I have a decent sized workshop, which will be fully cleaned, prepped and heated. I run a 14.5CFM compressor, plumbed in, but I need to add some decent water filtering before spraying.

I will also want to do the primer and prep on the outer panels before topcoating at a local shop.

I have spotted a used DeVilbiss gun with a 1.6 and 2.2mm tip. Would this be a reasonable buy for this job ?

If not, what would you recommend ?

It will do the job if price and condition of gun are suitable but in the ideal world you would want 1.4/1.8

Agree with norsa. Also watch out, the dv gun is likely to be cinventional or hvlp which will gobble air.

For what you are doing I would get the fast mover fmt3006 kit

I have the Devilbiss FLG5 with the 1.4 and 1.8 tips. I am a novice and this is the most expensive gun I've had but it's much better than the cheaper guns I've had, the sealey gold and Clarke guns.

Cheers guys. Just been checking the LVLP guns (fmt3006). Do you have experience of using these richie00boy ? The kit looks good, but they seem a bit on the cheap side ? Are they OK ?

I have used the smaller HVLP guns, here for spraying other stuff and I picked up a larger full size gun from Aldi, which is absolutely rubbish !!!

I don't mind spending about £100 on a decent 2nd hand one. What compressor setup are you running Burdekin ? I would prefer a decent branded gun like DeVilbiss, Iwata or something, just for peace of mind.

The one I was looking at is £60 with two tips, Nick.

I brought a £20 hvlp gun from lidl a while back and it performed well for the money

I just have a 14.5cfm but with 150l storage. The compressor can run the gun no bother but look at improving the outlet regulator if it is only 1/4".

60 is quite a good price for Dv but if I was to buy s,hand I would want to set up and see the spray pattern first. Its a precision instrument and as such will be useless if abused be it neglect or ignorance.

I have a 50Ltr tank, what do you mean about the 1/4" regulator Berdekin? I have a 1/4" one at the compressor outlet then through some 15mm copper pipe and a then a further 1/4" filter regulator onto an inline dessicant filter - Everything is 1/4" Oh yeh and a little gun regulator too, at the handle/grip.

Nick, I looked again at that gun and it is an FLG, but they seem to sell for £70 - £80 new, so I might keep looking. There is another gun on Ebay - A GTI Pro, but only with a 1.3mm tip ? Any good ?

i only use Sagola and Iwata but i think the GTI is one of their top of the range. 1.3 will do you for top coats and im sure dv could sell you a 1.4 set up if you want a wider fan or more material for roofs etc. Then you could get a cheap (£20/25) ebay 1.8 for your primer.

Yeah the 1/4 regulator on the compressor. I bypassed mine as it was really restrictive, I did a thread on it. 1/2 filter regulators flow better as well I would say. Try it first though, you may be fine as is but bypassing the regulator on my compressor was a big improvement.

The FLG is a good gun. Check out the gunman review on youtube as well. It is easy to use, setup and sprays nice. The new GPI (not GTI) is supposed to be very good as well. I think the GTI are more air hungry so check that.

Burdekin, I'll check out your regulator bypass mate, but I don't struggle for air at the gun. I'll also check out YouTube for that FLG review.

I just use a £20 ebay gun for primer 2.0 lays epoxy and hi build on a treat, I keep my gti just for topcoat

Langy - I will be getting a cheap gun for primer, cheers and I think I'll get a 1.4mm FLG 5 for top coats. I also have a little hobby building custom scale replica cars for people (when I get the chance), so that small R150-T gun, looks great too RA Dunk, I have just used cheap mini HVLP guns so far, but they aint that great. Not sure how useful it would be to spray larger stuff though.
