Which paint technology (for car)?

As a complete beginner.... if I want to "have a go", what type of paint can I reasonably spray DIY without investing in complex respiratory equipment or other specialist gear? I have a decent compressor and a clean(ish) workshop in which to work.

I'm not asking if it's a good idea - I already know the answer to that

I'm also aware that I'll have to invest in some form of PPE.

For all the prep work, no air fed is mandatory because you will be using epoxy primers which are non isocyanate.

For colour coats, you have lot of options from getting a body shop to do the job, to painting it with 1k products. The closest you can get to a professional job is with "clear over base". If you use a decent 1k lacquer, it should be fine for many years.

For outer panel primer- lechler 29107 (use fast hardener if workshop unheated).
For underbody primer- jotamastic 90A wintergrade.
For seam sealer sikaflex ebt.
For top coat, HMG nisocoat 2. The direct gloss is a bit trickier to spray , the nisocoat 2 clear works over normal automotive base coat however and is easier to spray.
This system will give performance very close indeed to isocyanate paints (the ones which require air fed mask) as all these paints are true 2k products, just with no isocyanates.

No worries. Now is a good time to try home spraying as there are now pretty decent isocyanate free 2k paints available. Ultrimax and cromadex also have iso free 2k paint systems but nisocoat is the only one which I have experience of. I painted my daily car with nisocoat 2 over a year ago and it's holding up very well indeed, absolutely no fading or other issues apparent.
By now Celly would be needing some polishing and would've needed more than two coats in the first place, with increased risk of reactions etc.
There are some down sides to the iso free 2k top coats, mostly in the form of flash times and sprayability- they're definitely more prone to orange peel and flash of a bit quick for spraying a whole car in one go. For the novice/ DIYer these aren't major issues though and I'm told the clear coat is more forgiving than the direct gloss I used, I painted my car a few panels at a time and it looks really, really good, absolutely transformed an old rust clear coat peeling Merc.

For home with no want to buy proper air fed I'd go 1k the smell limit comes before over exposure.

1k can look absolutely fantastic.



In my teens a sprayed a good number of motorcycles (sadly pre decent mobile camera)

They all held up well
