Which gas

In my van I carry a small aerosol of butane/propane mix,for the odd minor attempt at heating steel ,when I’m not carrying full size oxygen/acetylene cylinders ,the heat is minimal in comparison,yet has got me out of some scrapes,
Question is would a product like Mapp gas be hotter? Thanks.

I think mapp gas is just another butane/propane mix.
Plain propane is hottest but can freeze up in cold conditions.

Unless you are talking about the little tiny mapp bottles of oxy/acetaminophen if you can still get them anywhere?

mapp gas gives a hotter flame, than propane (or propane/butane mix) but it'll be the size of the flame that is more important. I use propane at home, if you use propane/butane mix in cold weather, the gas pressure can reduce so reducing the heat output

Propane is ok for a lot of stuff unless it's really cold. I can get problems with my mobile forge when its below 5c or so but then I'm pulling it off at a fair rate.

It doesn't actually freeze up but it's pretty sluggish when it's cold.

I think for blowtorches the bit of butane mixed in with it helps it vaporiser easier and stops and nasty flare ups. Easier to light as well.

The way to overcome it is to use a number of bottles all manifolded together so that the volumetric demand is shared between the cylinders: if you like, the cold that forms the ice on a single bottle is spread over multiple bottles.

I get on a lot better than the other guys I know as my tank is mounted horizontal so a lot more surface area for me to draw from.

I always use propane in the Caravan....even though we never go camping in cold weather......I prefer the screw in connector rather than those things on butane / calor gas bottles

Propane better in cold weather usage. Propane in non forced air 1980 °C (hottest point of flame cone)

Butane is cleaner low temp burn - better for cookers as you don't get black pans. Butane in non forced air 1970 °C (hottest point of flame cone)


I would also agree with TechAl about bottle fittings for caravans - threaded ones are "just better".


I use propane for everything - except my allotment shed boiling ring (tea kettle) - which I use butane for - as wifey can change a bottle without tools. But it is pig slow to boil on a winters day (not tried it below freexing ever thou). I think the only reason I have not swapped to propane is - I have a few blue bottles of Butane floating about that need using up and I would also have to find a threaded regulator in the depths of my garage.

But my intention is to swap over to propane at my garden when I retire - as there will be more tea drank over the garden when I am there in my dotage. I also have plans for a veranda and an reclining chair at the front of the existing shed. But I dare not tell wifey about them - as she will wonder why this will only happen when I retire.

No, it's different stuff* and burns a lot hotter than propane (or at least it feels like it does).

(*I thought it was propylene, but from wikipedia: MAPP gas was a trademarked name, belonging to The Linde Group, for a fuel gas based on a stabilized mixture of methylacetylene (propyne) and propadiene.)

If it will help your tea consumption, and provide a birthday gift idea for Mrs ('Darling, I can see you struggle every time you change the gas. This is for you, from my heart, to make your life easier'), it is possible to buy what is called a 'handwheel propane regulator' which has a rubber end where it contacts the bottle and does not need any tools to change.

propylene never caught on because its toxic....whereas propane is simply an asphyxiant.....i think i remember
