Of the two I'd plump for the Start rite. It has a more substantial column and table. If you'd asked Elliott 2G or Startrite there's probably probably little difference in quality.

It'll depend on what you need it to do, but my choice would be whichever has the lowest low speed. At home, I have wanted a higher speed than a generic Taiwanese bench/pillar drill could provide maybe half a dozen times in 40 years. I've never actually needed it though. Needing lower speed than it could provide was a pretty frequent occurrence until I got an 8-speed Kerry with backgear.

Neither of them, if you have the space, spend a little more for a bench top milling machine, will be far more rigid and capable, and likely cost about the same.

Look for one with a back gear, that will give you a range of low speeds for using large dia drill bits, hole saws & annular cutters. My Kerrys super 8 will go from 86rpm to 3000rpm using the belts & back gear combo.

I'd buy the Startrite Mercury as long as it has a 2 MT socket. I used to have one which didn't (not geared head) and I was limited to chuck size or "blacksmiths" drill bits.
