Which 115mm grinder?

Best one i ever had was an AEG that i bought in 1983, it lasted 25 years before its rear bearing housing sheared from the casing.
It was followed by another AEG that lasted about 5 years. Most of my work back in the day was grp boat repair so heavy duty grinding of the itchy stuff. Makitas used to eat switches for some reason, Bosch blocked up & overheated, De walt got too hot to hold after 15 minutes of it. I have an old Metabo that must be about 30 years old, my dad bought it new, It doesnt even feature in their model lists anymore, but its a solid reliable grinder.

Just remember whatever you buy model number is more important than make-nearly all "good" makes(fein, metabo, dewalt etc) have made in china crap aswell as their nicer european made models

Metabo are good. I still think my metabo beats my Fein on power and vibration.

I have bosch, elu, makita, metabo & parkside grinders & the metabo is the one I lift if I have a lot of grinding or wire brushing to do. An incredibly powerful motor plus it is incredibly smooth in use with little vibration meaning you can use it for long periods without your hands going numb!

Milwaukee do a 1200w paddle switched rat-tail grinder if you want power, it's a real beast and lovely to use for big jobs. No use for one-handed though.
Oldest grinder I have is a 30 year old Elu, I'd buy another but I think they went bust.

Lovely things to use, slim, powerful, smooth. Quite pricey and only available with a Hilti account though.

If I wanted a slim, cheap, medium power grinder for home i think I'd get a Makita

elu were upmarket black and decker ,,,, and aeg were rebranded as milwaukee , from memory.

IIRC Elu were Elu and then they were sold to Stanley B&D who then dismantled them, so depends when it was made as to if it was Elu, Elu (under B&D) or just B&D rebranded.
Same with AEG, they were a company in their own right, then they were sold to Atlas Copco, before being taken over by TTI (who own Milwaukee).

I have a Hitachi 4.5 and 9". The 9" is great but the 4.5" gearbox is very noisy. Works fine though but not my favourite to use.

Love my old 230V Bosch PWS 6-115 here. Treated it to a new lead and brushes recently. So smooth.

Tbh most quick stuff is done with the 18V Fakita.

I only do small bits and pieces these days and the 18v Fakita is my weapon of choice too.

I still have an original pre B&D 4.5" Elu grinder, still going perfectly thanks to its top build quality and a joy to use thanks to its paddle switch.

After the takeover I think the Elu stuff was also sold under the B&D professional brand before everything got cheap & nasty!
