Where to look for an older car?

Hi, a slightly unusual request, but...
I recently sold my "sensible" car (BMW 328i ) as it wasn't getting used much.
Since then have been looking for something old and interesting to tinker with and use as a weekend toy. Some ideal cars are advertised but most are many miles away (400 mile round trip etc). Some local "restored" ones seem overpriced and I won't get the fun of doing any work on them.
Ebay often has rusting incomplete wrecks going for not a lot less than similar cars in roadworthy condition, not good.
The "old car" magazines seem to be mainly articles and trade adverts, not many cars for sale

Does anyone have any suggestions where I can look for something suitable, or if you know of a car that might be for sale can you let me know

Wish-list :
tax exempt (essential), so late 60's early 70's ?
mot'd or able to be mot'd with a few weeks work. maybe a mot failure or unfinished project?
a practical estate car would be ideal but open to suggestions
needing some welding / mechanical work is fine but not a total rebuild, would prefer something that starts and drives.
engine size 1200 - 2.5L for sensible fuel consumption?
something that won't need £1000's spent on new / rare parts.
looks are not too important, solid and shabby is good so I can see what needs doing.
must be legal with number plates etc, and hopefully new-style logbook.
around Newcastle / Tyneside but can collect up to 150 miles away for the right car.

Owners clubs are a good bet if you've a shortlist of brands. Tax exempt, practical estate car... Volvo Amazon is the first to mind

Hello Nomad,

another and better than the Volvo in my opinion, is the Triumph 2.5 estate, very undervalued so you can pick a good one for reasonable money or one needing a bit of work for less. Just beware of rusty ones, they are time consuming to repair due to the body construction with everything being double or in the case of the sills, triple skinned.

Many thanks everyone - I have been looking on the websites mentioned, but hadn't thought of local car clubs
Was looking at a nice restored Amazon but it was expensive, have found 2 "project" Amazon estates for £500 the pair that sound interesting but they're too far away.
Just missed out on a Hillman Minx estate last week, but not found much else around the North-East.

Any other suggestions (for cars or places to look for 'em) most welcome

Being a Morris Minor/tax exempt kit car nut it always seems most of the interesting one's are up your end of the country, but perhaps you are after something more powerful/unusual/interesting than that!

Amazon estates, excellent but in demand so keep prices firm. Sold my last one within an hour of putting it for sale, at the full asking. I've had two, both used as dailies with no reliability probs at all. Both 140k on the clock and neither used a drop of oil, compression within 5psi. Parts plentiful. My overdrive one cruised 85 all day happily.
