where to get springs?

looking for springs to use on a 20 ton bottle jack press...need 4 tension springs, 235mm relaxed length, minimum 440mm at full tension and strong enough to retract said bottle jack when pressure valve is open...

have chosen a 20 ton jack as i can get one new for 25 quid and if im going to make it i may as well do it properly eh?

I have the same project to start soon haven't found any yet, but was thinking of a couple of pulleys and a counterweight just to give enough force to return the jack.

Any springmakers close to you ? There was one near me, they made me a few springs for a project. It was amazing watching the machines make them, only took seconds and didn't cost much at all.

dont think there are any spring makers nearby, would be nice if there were i like watching things like that.

i can get washer machine springs though so will look into that

thats interesting, and now in my basket. havent got a compressor that works or that i have access to (its buried in my fathers shed and there is something seriously wrong with it) but wondering what size comp would be needed to run that

yeah i just saw the thread...what ever i do i wont be buying until after xmas and will probably end up up getting the air powered jack that has a spring on it anyway. thanks though

Hmmm...... That air/hydraulic jack is about half way to this and a lot less work.

One of the Lidl £70 compressors would run that ok but it does have a hand pump. Easily converted to run upside down too.

no need to run it upsidedown, i will be attaching a cross bar on the bottom to act as a guide and to hold various attachments

I've got one of those jacks and wouldn't say it needs that much air to run, any compressor capable of running an air tool handles it fine.
It works on surprisingly little pressure unless you're doing something heavy, and if the air supply is low it just runs slower, it doesn't 'waste' air.
