Where might you use this type of nail? (pic)

I've had these nails in the nail container for many years and never been sure what they would be used for. The heads appear to be masonry type, but the washer type discs fixed near the base are unusual. Anyone used these?

Hilti gun nails
Fired into masonry or steel with something similar to a .22 blank

As above, used to attach timber battens to masonary, the washer stops the head disappearing into the timber.

To allow the process to work as intended, I imagine that the washer is not as firmly fixed to the nail as I originally thought?

me bruvver once brought some black firing caps for one from work when i was a kid . he gave me 10 bob to tidy his room up they were on the floor so i swept them up on a shovel and threw the rubbish on the sitting room fire. all orf a sudden there was 3 loud bangs i turned back to see red hot cinders on the carpet did he get a bollocking

Yeah , as you whack it with a hammer the washer slides up the nail .. used to fasten bituminous tanking in basements or battening out brickwork ...

Oh yes, I remember red hot cinders on the carpet-one of the perils of poking a large open coil fire! You could smell the burns for a while afterwards. The many black areas on the carpet around the hearth.

You put these into a Hilti gun, hence why the washers are at the bottom of the nail, as it is fired in the main passes through the washer and the head stops it.

You don't actually need a gun, you can drive them in with a hammer, just like in the old days when we used screwdrivers for screws!

Yes you can, these were one of the original do it all type fixings which could fire into steel, masonry, concrete and many other substrates or combinations of substrate.

The original were also used in boat building.
Hammer into the outer planks and into the ribs.
The end was then cut flush. Bent over into the wood of the rib. Or bent over a "Rove". A large flat rivet. In Portsmouth Dockyard they still make boats in that way.

Used to be a good place to "Borrow" copper blocks.
